The Life of Richard Wagner Details

FULL SYNOPSIS

Filmed in Germany, the multi-reel biopic The Life of Richard Wagner was distributed in the U.S. by Broadway theatrical impresario A.H. Woods. Opening on a marble bust of the famed composer, the film then depicts in "tableau" fashion the various demons plaguing the trouble Wagner, from an unhappy marriage to on-and-off dire poverty. After escaping his creditors, Wagner briefly forsakes music in favor of radical politics, but returns to his true calling with such imperishable operatic classics as The Flying Dutchman and Tannhauser. The film ends on the customary note of triumph when Wagner is "adopted" by the royal Bavarian court. The whole story was squeezed into four reels, or approximately 60 minutes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
