Watch First 'Mowgli' Trailer; Here's All We Know

May 21, 2018

Based on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, the upcoming big-screen adaptation Mowgli confounds expectations -- in a good way! Rather than keeping strictly to a familiar story, the filmmakers have chosen a darker, more menacing path, starting with the titular character.

Mowgli is raised rough long before he escapes into the jungle. No wonder he feels much more kinship with the wild animals than with humans. Watch the newly-released first trailer below, then read onward to learn everything we know about Mowgli.

Who directed?

Andy Serkis. His resume as an actor includes an amazing list of excellent motion-capture performances.  He first came to prominence with his role as Gollum in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and since then we've especially enjoyed his work in King Kong, the new Planet of the Apes trilogy, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He also directed the affecting drama Breathe.

Who stars?

It's quite a cast! Young Rohan Chand stars as Mowgli. The all-star ensemble includes: Benedict Cumberbatch (Shere Khan, a tiger), Cate Blanchett (Kaa, a snake), Andy Serkis (Baloo, a bear), Christian Bale (Bagheera, a panther), Peter Mullan (Akela, a wolf), Naomie Harris (Nisha, a wolf), Matthew Rhys (John Lockwood, a human), Eddie Marsan (Vihaan), Jack Reynor (Brother Wolf), and Freida Pinto.

What makes this film different from previous versions?

Serkis says that his version will be more faithful to Kipling's original tale. As to his character Baloo, Serkis describes him thusly: "He is actually quite tough in this one. A dark Baloo." The film has been rated PG-13 for "for intense sequences of action violence including bloody images, and some thematic elements." So, this will not be your father's Jungle Book.

When can we see it?

Warner Bros. will release Mowgli in theaters on October 19, 2018.
