Watch: Even Rachel McAdams' Audition for 'The Notebook' Will Make You Cry

Jun 26, 2014

Fellow Canadians Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were the talk of the town when Nick Cassavetes’ The Notebook hit theaters 10 years ago this week. Their on-screen chemistry shone through in the romantic tearjerker about a wealthy Southern belle who carries on a forbidden affair with a plain-spoken laborer.

Gosling and McAdams had an offscreen romance after filming, but it wasn’t until years later that Gosling spoke about their combative relationship on the set of The Notebook. “We inspired the worst in each other. It was a strange experience, making a love story and not getting along with your costar in any way,” the actor said. Gosling even went so far as to demand another actress be brought in for their scenes, since he didn’t want to look McAdams in the face (Cassavetes refused). Shouting matches were a frequent occurrence.

Despite the troubled production, McAdams was Cassavetes’ strong pick for the part. “When Rachel McAdams came in and read, it was apparent that she was the one. She and Ryan had great chemistry between them,” he said. She beat out nine other actresses for the role and was given the script just one day in advance. One of the scenes McAdams recited for her audition includes this emotional argument her Allie has with Gosling’s Noah before speeding off in her car. The male voice you hear offscreen is Gosling. The passion was already evident before the cameras officially started rolling.
