Trailer Roundup: 'War for the Planet of the Apes,' 'Transformers: The Last Knight,' 'First Kill'

War for the Planet of the Apes

The summer movie season is dominated by big action pictures like Tom Cruise's The Mummy, which opens nationwide today, but smaller independent features also seek to make their mark, like the thriller It Comes at Night, which can also be seen in select theaters starting today.

That pattern continues in two newly released trailers for blockbuster properties and one for an indie feature. The only thing they have in common is that they can all be described as action movies.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Director Matt Reeves previously helmed the impressive found-footage monster movie Cloverfield before making Let Me In, a tightly coiled thriller that revolved around young Chloe Grace Moretz. He then scaled up the action spectacle in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The new trailer reminds one of Let Me In in its suggestion that a young girl called Nova (Amiah Miller) will play a key role in the fireworks to come. The movie opens on July 14.

Transformers: The Last Knight

Michael Bay needs no further introduction as a director of grand-scale action, but what's perhaps most interesting in this international trailer is the idea of Mark Wahlberg as a quipster who's along for the ride, as opposed to a traditional male hero. Instead, the mechanized giant monsters are given their proper place as the stars, supported by the likes of Anthony Hopkins. It opens wide on June 21.

First Kill

At first blush, Bruce Willis appears to be the star as the chief representative of law enforcement in a small town, but soon it becomes evident that he may be more of a lurking threat, a lawman who may or may not be one of the good guys. Hayden Christensen has the lead role as a father who seeks to recover his son from a criminal (Gethin Anthony) with vicious intent. Much running, shooting and grimacing ensue in the trailer; the movie will be released on July 21.
