Ice Age: Continental Drift

Foreign Families: In the U.S., the R-rated duo of Ted and Magic Mike placed at the top of the box office charts, but overseas it’s a different story. Ice Age: Continental Drift opened in 34 markets on more than 9,500 screens and earned $78 million, topping The Amazing Spider-Man, which opened on about 6,000 screens in 13 territories and took in $50.2 million. Both earned about the same on a per-screen basis. The Amazing Spider-Man opens in the U.S. tomorrow, while Ice Age: Continental Drift comes out on July 13. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Not So Secret: Director Antoine Fuqua is putting together a solid cast for his White House thriller, Olympus Has Fallen, which follows a former Secret Service agent (Gerard Butler) who must foil terrorists and save the President (Aaron Eckhart). Angela Basset will play the director of the Secret Service, and the latest to join up is Dylan McDermott (TV’s American Horror Story), who will charge into action as a Secret Service agent. Bad Meat: A real-life cannibal is in the inspiration for a stage play that will be adapted for the big screen under the direction of Stuart Gordon. Gordon, who has extensive credits both on stage (Nevermore: An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe) and screen (Re-Animator), is casting both an L.A. stage production and the film that will follow. The play is titled Taste and is based on the case of Armin Meiwes, the so-called Rotenburg Cannibal, who solicited on the Internet for a volunteer willing to be eaten. [Showblitz]

Rushing Into Action: In a new overseas trailer for Jack Reacher, due later this year, Tom Cruise is dubbed into Russian, but his fists do the talking. They’re not in the trailer, but Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, Rosamund Pike, and Werner Herzog also star. [Twitch]
