Superhero Movie Buzz: 'The Flash,' 'Gambit,' and 'Deadpool 2' Updates

Kiersey Clemons

The Flash: Last month, we heard that Rick Famuyiwa had been hired to direct The Flash, the upcoming movie about the speedy superhero. Most recently, Famuyiwa's career includes HBO's Confirmation, about Anita Hill's testimony against Judge Clarence Thomas, and Dope, an indie comedy about a teenage geek and a potentially life-changing party.

Ezra Miller is set to star as the titular character and now we're starting to hear about other roles. Specifically, Variety reports that Kiersey Clemons (above) is the top choice for the female lead. She previously played a supporting role in Dope, costarred in this year's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and will be featured in the upcoming Flatliners remake.

Rita Ora / Sing Street

What character might she portray? No official description has been released, though "insiders" told Variety that Iris West is the most likely candidate. In the DC comics, Iris is a journalist and friend of Barry Allen, also known as The Flash. At least two other actresses are also reportedly in consideration: Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Lucy Boynton (Sing Street).

The movie is aiming to begin production later this year. The Flash is scheduled to open in theaters on March 16, 2018.

Channing Tatum

Superhero spin-off movie Gambit is set to star Channing Tatum and will be directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow), but its status has been left in flux since February, when it was removed from the release calendar. Now producer Simon Kinberg says: "We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning -- or spring -- of next year."

The sequel to Deadpool is also aiming to begin production in early 2017, according to Kinberg. If those start dates are met, it's likely that both movies would be ready to roll out in 2018. Fox has staked out March 2, 2018 and June 29, 2018 as release dates for Marvel movies, but we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out if Gambit and Deadpool 2 will fill those slots.
