Sony Unveils Plans for a 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie

Jun 11, 2014

Sonic the HedgehogBack in the old days, before there were Sony PlayStations and consoles made by Microsoft, the biggest battle in the ongoing console war was waged between Nintendo and Sega. The two most infamous combatants in that ongoing conflict were Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog – the definitive mascots for each company. The years haven’t been as good to the wickedly fast blue hedgehog as they have been to the Italian plumber, but maybe that will change with today’s news.

Sony Pictures, Sega Sammy Group’s Marza Animation Planet, and producer Neal Moritz are bringing Sonic to the big screen, in an all-new feature film that will blend CGI and live-action in a way that will presumably look sort of like The Smurfs. The real question is, can this icon of the golden age of gaming transition from the controller to the screen? Sony’s betting big that he can.

Plot details are scarce, but Upright Citizens Brigade members Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are currently writing a script that will feature Sonic being Sonic – and will also involve characters like Dr. Eggman.

Making a Sonic film is going to be tricky – the games were known more for their impressive speed and precise platforming than they were for their narratives – but Colombia Pictures President of Production Hannah Minghella believes things will work out.

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base.”

With modern games appearing more and more like interactive films, it’s a bit puzzling as to why anyone would want to make a feature involving Sonic, a throwback to an era where story was an afterthought. Halo, Gears of War, Bioshock, Uncharted and countless other recent games appear to be far better candidates for the big screen, but Sony’s hitched its wagon to Sega’s most famous character.

If nothing else, maybe this can reignite the old war between Mario and the Hedgehog – now they can compete to see which one of them starred in the worst movie. It’s gonna be hard to top Super Mario Bros…
