Does Lionsgate Want Robert Pattinson for Finnick Odair in 'The Hunger Games' Sequel 'Catching Fire'?

Robert PattinsonAnd so it begins. With Catching Fire heading towards a fall start date, casting has got to begin soon. And, sure enough, one of our first pieces of news has arrived, and it’s a pretty bold statement. Apparently got a tip that Lionsgate has its eye on Robert Pattinson for the role of the dreamy District 4 tribute, Finnick Odair.

Regardless of how I feel about The Twilight Saga films, I’ve seen enough of Pattinson’s work to know he’s a solid actor. However, good acting chops isn’t the only factor at play here.

First off, Pattinson doesn’t match the description of Finnick. I’ll be the first to admit that Pattinson is a good looking guy, but Finnick Odair is much more the Abercrombie model-type - tall, tan, fit and handsome. Sure Pattinson could beef up, but I suspect he’s just too naturally lean to look strong and athletic enough.

Then there’s the Twilight factor. Again, this isn’t to say Pattinson is a bad actor, but the guy certainly dug himself a hole with that franchise. There’s going to be a lot of audience crossover between Twilight and the Hunger Games movies and it could compromise Catching Fire’s believability to have someone who’s basically the face of another franchise in the mix. And that’s not to say Pattinson can never have another role other than Edward Cullen, but we do need a little distance from The Saga before that can happen.

Now for an obvious question: Is there even any validity to this story? I’m not particularly familiar with Think McFly Think, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Plus, it's totally possible that Pattinson’s name could have come up in a conversation. He worked with Francis Lawrence on Water for Elephants, so perhaps the Catching Fire director simply threw his name out during a meeting. The one word I might question in this article is “chasing.” Perhaps Pattinson is on some sort of “Finnick Odair Potentials” list, but I highly doubt this already wildly successful franchise is chasing him when there are so many other talented and more fitting options who’d jump at the opportunity to win this role.

What do you think?
