Ridley Scott Gets Biblical in Behind-the-Scenes Look at 'Exodus: Gods and Kings'

Exodus Gods and Kings

Ridley Scott is a moviemaking machine as he enters the latter stages of his 70s, and the man who gave us titles like Gladiator is ready to unleash another big-budget period epic with his newest feature Exodus: Gods and Kings. That’s right, the man behind Blade Runner is about to get biblical on you.

Yahoo! Movies scored an interesting new behind-the-scenes clip that reveals the massive scope of Scott’s newest venture. The director takes us backstage and on location to show us Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton as Moses and Ramses, two brothers who have a falling out that leads to war.

As is to be expected in a Ridley Scott joint, Exodus has some enormous sets, gigantic set pieces, and an action-oriented approach to the classic story that might lure in the less religious filmgoers with the promise of crazy action and special effects. While few people could ever dream of replacing Charlton Heston as Moses, Christian Bale is one of the few actors who could fill Chuck’s giant sandals.

Unfortunately, the film has generated some controversy on the casting front – and not from Heston fans. The Internet has been rather vocal in its objection to the “whitewashing” of the film’s cast. While Joel Edgerton is virtually unrecognizable as Ramses, he’s still a white man playing a decidedly ethnic role. It’s hard to blame Edgerton for wanting to work, but it is unfortunate that we’re still casting white actors in roles that should have gone to minority performers.

Will that be enough to keep people from seeing Exodus when it opens on December 12? It’s too soon to say. What we can predict is that you’ll really dig this new clip promoting the film. Watch it below.
