Reel TV: Two 'Sleepy Hollow' Shows Are in Development, One from the Writers of 'Star Trek'

Movie fans are accustomed to having multiple movies tackling the same general plot or conflict. There's enough box-office room for both Dante's Peak and Volcano, but the seasonal world of television isn't quite as accomodating. That's why we're curious to see which of two recently revealed Sleepy Hollow TV shows will chop off the other's head to become king of the primetime shows about people with chopped-off heads.

The higher profile of the two projects is easily 20th Century Fox TV's take, headlined by Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Their version of the classic story by Washington Irving "follows Ichabod Crane as he partners with Sleepy Hollow’s local female sheriff to solve the mysteries of a town ravaged by the battle between good and evil." Len Wiseman is set to direct the pilot, reuniting the Total Recall director with Kurtzman and Orci after having directed their (perfectly enjoyable) Hawaii Five-O pilot.

That trio's direct competition is a CW series of the same name from producers Patrick Macmanus, Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze. Considerably less is known about their project, but they do have Warner Bros. TV backing their deal, so don't count the underdog trio out just because they're going up against blockbuster-producing talent. After all, the CW is the only broadcast network on TV that's proven for years now that it's dedicated to putting fantasy and horror shows on in prime time. Sure, they're not always great, but successes like Supernatural give one hope.

Now we've just got to wait and see who can actually get a Sleepy Hollow series on the air first.
