Bohemian Rhapsody

Rami Malek stars as Freddie Mercury, lead singer of famed rock band Queen, in Bohemian Rhapsody (above), which opened over the weekend to great interest from audiences. The musical biopic earned an estimated $50 million in the U.S., per Box Office Mojo, and has now grossed more than $141 million worldwide.

Naturally, our thoughts turn to what's next in the world of music-themed biographical portraits, and we don't have to wait long. Here's a look at three upcoming movies that will aim to rock you and/or your family.

'Vox Lux'

Natalie Portman stars as a fictional pop star named Celeste in Vox Lux, supported by her manager (Jude Law), her publicist (Jennifer Ehle) and millions of adoring fans. In the trailer, we see her volatile personality, which draws considerable attention from the press and concern from her family members. We also get some sense of the forces that have driven her to success.

Portman's performance has already been hailed as one of the year's best, which could put her in awards contention. Brady Corbet wrote and directed the drama; it will open in theaters on December 7.

'Mary Poppins Returns'

The long-awaited sequel to Disney's classic family film stars Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, who returns to help the grown-up Banks children (Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw) as they face new challenges. Lin-Manuel Miranda also stars as Jack, a lamplighter with musical talents that promise to outshine his profession.

Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke are featured in a musical that should be a treat for parents as well as children. Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods) directed; look for the movie in theaters everywhere on December 19.

The teaser trailer claims that Rocketman is "based on a true fantasy" and some of the imagery certainly backs that up. It sounds quite ambitious, yet could also be a fun, fresh approach; the film  promises to cover the life of pop star Elton John from his early years until he became a worldwide musical sensation, and beyond.

Taron Egerton (Kingsman: Golden Circle, Eddie the Eagle), who sang in an animated role in the delightful Sing, stars as Elton John, with Jamie Bell as his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. Bryce Dallas Howard and Richard Madden also star; Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) is directing. Rocketman is set for release on May 17, 2019.
