Next 3 Dwayne Johnson Movies: 'Hobbs and Shaw,' 'Jungle Cruise,' 'Red Notice'

Jul 16, 2018

Dwayne Johnson's latest action thriller, Skyscraper (above), fell a bit short of expectations at the domestic box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $25.48 million. Overseas, the film opened in 57 territories and earned an estimated $40.4 million, which bodes well for the future. Skyscraper will open in 11 more international territories next weekend, including China.

What's next for the actor? Johnson will be appearing in a supporting role in the biographical comedy Fighting with My Family, due out on March 1, 2019, as well as starring in the next installment in the Jumanji series, which is currently scheduled to be released on December 13, 2019. He has some other cinematic reunions in mind, too.

Hobbs and Shaw

Johnson will re-team with Jason Statham for the first spin-off from the Fast and Furious franchise. They will be reprising their roles as Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, respectively. The former antagonists arrived at a point of grudging mutual respect by the end of The Fate of the Furious, though we haven't heard too much about a possible plot for the new film.

What we know so far is that Vanessa Kirby (Netflix's The Crown) will be playing one of Deckard Shaw's siblings and that Idris Elba will a play a villainous role. David Leitch (Atomic Blonde) will be directing. The action-adventure is set for theatrical release on July 26, 2019.

Jungle Cruise

Sure, it's based on the Disney Parks attraction, but the attraction itself found inspiration in the classic film The African Queen. Johnson will portray a boat captain who takes a woman (Emily Blunt) and her brother (Jack Whitehall) "on a mission to find a tree believed to possess healing powers." Meanwhile, a competing German expedition seeks the same treasure.

Paul Giamatti (reuniting with Johnson after appearing with him in San Andreas) will play "a crusty harbormaster." Edgar Ramirez (reuniting with Blunt after both starred in The Girl on the Train) and Jesse Plemons will play villainous characters. Director Jaume Collet-Serra (The Commuter) is at the helm. The film will cruise into theaters on October 19, 2019.

Red Notice

Johnson and director Rawson Marshall Thurber first teamed on Central Intelligence and then on Skyscraper (above). They will next join forces to make Red Notice, initially described simply as a "globe-trotting heist thriller."

Soon after the initial announcement, we heard that Johnson will star "as an Interpol agent who is assigned to capture the most-wanted art thief in the world." More recently, we learned that Gal Gadot will also star as a "brilliant and mysterious figure in the art world." A third lead role has yet to be cast.

Johnson and Gadot both appeared in three installments of the Fast and Furious franchise, so it's a reunion for them as well as for Johnson and Thurber. Look for Red Notice in theaters on June 12, 2020.
