New 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' Photos Reveal Badass Zombie Slayers

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

New photos from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies suggest that the forthcoming big-screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel may not be exactly what we've been anticipating.

First published in 2009, Grahame-Smith's book became an unexpected bestseller, thanks in part to the novelty of introducing the undead into the world created by Jane Austen. The writer followed that up with his novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which was made into a broadly comic, self-consciously silly blockbuster in 2012 by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted).

That set audience expectations for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but a new interview suggests that the filmmakers have something else in mind. As in Austen's classic book, the movie will revolve around Elizabeth Bennett (Lily James, Cinderella) and her husband-hunting sisters (Ellie Bamber, Millie Brady, Bella Heathcote and Suki Waterhouse), as well as the romance between our heroine and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley). The key difference, added by Grahame-Smith, is that they all live in an alternate world where zombies (aka the "sorry stricken") have been slowly walking around the 19th-century countryside for 70 years.

However, "the movie's big wink," director Burr Steers (Charlie St. Cloud) told Entertainment Weekly, "is that there is no big wink." In other words, 'everyone plays it straight,' which means there may be more emphasis on pride and prejudice rather than zombies. Still, there should be plenty of opportunity for Elizabeth to get in some zombie-killing. While Lily James declares that "it's definitely not camp," she adds about her character: "She’s the most badass zombie slayer there is."

The new set of photos reinforces those dual impressions. Charles Dance, Lena Headey, Douglas Booth, and Matt Smith also star. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies heads to theaters on February 5, 2016.
