How Do You Know

The Biggest Eyes of All: The indie production Big Eyes has landed two big stars. Reese Witherspoon (in a role once rumored for Kate Hudson) and Ryan Reynolds will play Margaret and Walter Keane, responsible for paintings of children with large eyes that gained worldwide notoriety, who later experienced marital and legal troubles; the film shoots this spring. (Deadline)

U.S. Box Office: The fourth installment in a series, Underworld Awakening topped the weekend box office, taking home an estimated $25.4 million. Kate Beckinsale’s return to the franchise beat out WWII flying picture Red Tails ($19.1 million), Mark Wahlberg in Contraband ($12.1 million in its second week of release), the nationwide expansion of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (a disappointing $10.5 million), and Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire ($9 million). Supernatural Coupling: Two actors are “in final negotiations” to star in The Conjuring, described as a supernatural thriller. Patrick Wilson (Insidious) and Vera Farmiga (Orphan) would play a married couple, who are “demonologists and psychic investigators,” facing “the most horrifying case of their career”; James Wan (Insidious) is set to direct. Inside the Castle: The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival will screen Orson Welles’ classic Citizen Kane on March 9, which may not be newsworthy in itself, but the location deserves note. For the first time, the film will be shown at Heart Castle Theater, on the estate of William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper tycoon whose life inspired the movie, and who then tried to keep the film from ever being shown.
