Kristen Wiig in Talks to Play Cheetah in 'Wonder Woman' Sequel

Mar 01, 2018

UPDATE: Sorry, Sarah Paulson fans! Kristen Wiig (above in Ghosbusters) is now in talks for the role of the villainous Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2, according to Deadline. Read on to learn more about the Cheetah character and why Paulson wanted to play her.

(Original post follows.)

We're ending 2017 with one thing being certain: Wonder Woman was the movie of the year. When you combine its reviews (92% on Rotten Tomatoes), its box office success ($822 million worldwide), its various audience scores and awards favor, the DC superhero blockbuster is the most noteworthy hit of all.

That makes Wonder Woman 2 one of the most anticipated movies of the future, particularly of 2019 when it's due for release. So far, very little is known about the sequel, which will bring back Gal Gadot as the titular warrior (aka "Diana Prince") and director Patty Jenkins at the helm. But there's some chatter regarding what it could and should involve, and it's not just coming from the fans but also from potential collaborators.

Last week, a superhero fan on Twitter directed a message at Jenkins to have Cheetah be the sequel's main villain, and he suggested either Sarah Paulson or Charlize Theron for the role. Well, Paulson took the bait and affirmed she'd love to play the part. Now, admittedly thanks in part to all of us sharing the exchange and agreeing with the idea, support is growing for it to come true.

It didn't used to be genuine news anytime an actor or actress said they'd love to play a role. Outside of when Sean Young tried too hard to win the part as Catwoman in Batman Returns, typically it's just a matter of someone being asked if he or she would like to be cast as so and so in such and such blockbuster franchise and them basically stating that, sure, they'd love that high-profile gig and paycheck.

Nowadays there are movies and casting opportunities literally being planned out on social media. Some of it is still just wishful chitchat, but you never know. Neither Jenkins nor Gadot have commented or even liked the tweet in question, so right now there's nothing to the fans and Paulson's desires. Everyone interested can just cross their fingers for now.

As for why you should be interested, here's a little something to know about Cheetah: considered Wonder Woman's primary adversary (her Joker or Lex Luthor), Cheetah is a woman possessing superhuman strength and the appearance of her namesake animal. Although there have been a number of versions of the character in the comics, fans would love to see the Barbara Ann Minerva incarnation, as she was a close friend of Diana's and turned evil by a cursed relic. Not only is she a good physical match for Wonder Woman, but it would be prudent to have a female villain in the sequel.

And why is Paulson right for the part? The rising star, who can currently be seen in Steven Spielberg's The Post, has won awards for her unforgettable performances on TV's American Horror Story and American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, in which she portrayed iconic prosecutor Marcia Clark. You also know her for her standout roles in CarolGame Change and 12 Years a Slave. She'll soon make more waves as one of the title criminals of Ocean's 8 but could use a heavy blockbuster gig to shine in a way she hasn't been able to yet.

Will Jenkins be influenced by a couple of tweets to feature Cheetah and have Paulson play her? We'll find out eventually and see for sure when Wonder Woman 2 arrives in theaters on November 1, 2019.
