Guillermo del Toro Says There Will Never Be a 'Hellboy 3'

Feb 21, 2017

Bad news today for you Hellboy fans out there. Despite fan desire for a third installment of Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy series, the writer-director took to Twitter to announce once and for all that there will never be a part three. Commence sadness.

Rarely do we see a filmmaker take a stand like this on a sequel because, well, this is Hollywood and you never say never when it comes to any sequel. Heck, in the past couple of years we've seen sequels to movies decades after the original, so clearly the door is always left open for more.

But not so with Hellboy, it appears. The first Hellboy was a small hit, earning almost $100 million worldwide, and in 2008 Hellboy: The Golden Army was one of those rare sequel that improved upon its predecessor's numbers, churning out more than $160 million worldwide. That being said, plans for a third iteration just never came to fruition, even though both Del Toro and star Ron Perlman have always been down for more Hellboy stories.

Perlman told Empire back in 2015 that Del Toro had big ideas for part three, and that the series was always designed as a trilogy. "We've only done two-thirds, so I feel that we're not really done until we finish it," he said.

Here's Perlman's comical response to the news, via Twitter.

So is this really the end of the line for the series? At least for now the wildly imaginative world of Hellboy will remain in the pages of its comic, and on screen in its two movies written and directed by Guillermo del Toro.
