These Are Your Young Han Solo Candidates (Probably); Who Would You Choose?

Alden Ehrenreich / Jack Reynor / Taron Egerton

Yesterday news broke that Harrison Ford would once again be starring as Indiana Jones in an adventure to be directed by Steven Spielberg, due out in 2019. Many questions immediately arose, especially since Ford will soon turn 74 years of age.

Meanwhile, Ford's other iconic role, Han Solo in the Star Wars universe, will definitely be getting younger in a spin-off movie. Based on a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, the movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) and is due out in theaters on May 25, 2018.

Casting has been underway for some time, and reports indicate that thousands of actors have been considered. Back in January, we heard that the list had been shortened to eight candidates, including Miles Teller (Whiplash, Fantastic Four), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, Insurgent) and Dave Franco (Neighbors, 21 Jump Street).

Now comes word that the shortlist has been narrowed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, three actors were tested in London last weekend (above, left to right): Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service).

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

Reynor is the only one of the three who was on the January shortlist of eight. But the report says that this supposed shortlist may include "a few other names," which points to the extreme secrecy of the casting process. As already demonstrated with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode VIII, rumors may abound, yet Disney has been very good about keeping things as secret as possible in regard to the Star Wars franchise.

Of the three noted above, Ehrenreich built up great industry buzz based on his hilarious breakout performance in the latest effort from Joel and Ethan Coen, even though the movie itself was not a smash hit. Reynor was somewhat stoic in Transformers: Age of Extinction, but has been winning good notices for his role in the upcoming musical drama Sing Street. In the video below, he talks about the possibility of appearing as Han Solo (beginning at the 4:14 mark).

As for Egerton, he broke out big as a brash new recruit in Kingsman: The Secret Service and will star in the sequel. He's demonstrated his range in Eddie the Eagle, which just came out, and is also prepared to play the titular role in Robin Hood: Origins, heading for release next year.

Obviously, Disney and the filmmakers have a tough choice ahead of them, but it sounds like they're nearing the end of the process and we'll be fascinated to see who is selected to take on the iconic and very challenging role.
