A Quiet Place

This past weekend, A Quiet Place scored a much bigger total at the box office than expected. Even better than that, though, it reinforced the range of Emily Blunt and also set things up nicely for the next phase of John Krasinski's career as a director and actor.

The film's writers already have sequel ideas, though it's not at all certain that Blunt and/or Krasinski will return. Even if they are not involved in a sequel, their futures certainly look bright.

What's next for Emily Blunt?

Emily Blunt has delivered standout performances for years in everything from the indie romantic drama My Summer of Love (2004) to the dark comedy The Devil Wears Prada (2006), to the oddball Sunshine Comedy (2008), to the period horror movie The Wolfman (2010) to the sci-fi thrillers Looper (2012) and Edge of Tomorrow (2014), to the musical Into the Woods (2014) and the outstanding dramatic thriller Sicario (2015). Her searing performance as a devoted wife and loving mother in A Quiet Place anchors the film's family dynamics.

She will next be seen in Mary Poppins Returns, due later this year. She will soon star opposite Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise, which is expected to begin production next month.

What's next for John Krasinski?

Krasinski is still probably best known for his sly, friendly, comic role on the extremely popular sitcom The Office. Krasinski made his feature directorial debut with the dramatic comedy Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (2009). After The Office concluded, he helmed the dramatic comedy The Hollars, in which he also costarred, and he also starred very effectively in Michael Bay's action drama 13 Hours (2006). Krasinski has proven that he is adept at drawing good performances from his fellow actors and his talent for visual storytelling is showcased in A Quiet Place.

He will next be seen in the dramatic series Jack Ryan this summer. Recently he also said he would be happy to portray Mr. Fantastic alongside his wife as the Invisible Woman if the opportunity to recreate Marvel's Fantastic Four came along. Naturally, that will need to wait for big studios to make big-budget decisions.

With the success of A Quiet Place, however, we imagine that the sky's the limit for him as a director right now; it's likely that projects with much bigger budgets will be offered to him. Really, it depends on what he wants to do next: another intimate drama? Or something deemed more ambitious and on a larger scale?

What do we know about their next projects?

Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel that picks up the story in 1930s London, 25 years after the events of the classic original musical. After a tragedy in the family, their former nanny (Blunt) comes back to help them heal. Lin-Manuel Miranda costars; Julie Walters, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep will also appear.

As for Jungle Cruise, Dwayne Johnson sees the film as taking inspiration from the classic romantic adventure The African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, and Disney hopes it will kick off a new franchise. Blunt would definitely be an asset in such a franchise, if that's something she decides to pursue. Speaking of franchises, Blunt says she hopes she will be available if a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow comes to fruition in the near future.

Created by novelist Tom Clancy and previously played on-screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine, Krasinski will portray the titular Jack Ryan in his younger years as a CIA analyst who is thrust into field work to try to prevent an attack against the U.S.

When are they due for release?

Jack Ryan will debut on the Amazon Prime streaming service on August 31.

Mary Poppins Returns is set for theatrical release on December 25, 2018.

Jungle Cruise will likely open in theaters sometime next year.
