Eddie Murphy will Not Host the Oscars

Nov 09, 2011

Following yesterday's debacle in which Brett Ratner stepped down as producer of the next Academy Awards ceremony, the person he chose to host, Eddie Murphy, has done the same. As part of the press release announcing Murphy's exit, the star said, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”

This was pretty expected once Murphy's buddy Ratner stepped down, especially since Ratner was probably the only reason why Murphy agreed to the hosting gig in the first place. But now with Ratner gone, it was all but a given that Murphy would follow soon after since he'd have to step down before they brought on a new producer. Now, with the ceremony approaching this February, Academy officials will scramble to replace both Ratner and Murphy. Sources claim they're already looking within the Broadway community, so expect an announcement soon.
