Chazz Palminteri Returns to Mob Movies for 'Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father'

Aug 24, 2011

The cast of Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father has quickly taken shape, and Variety has announced that The Usual Suspects and Bronx Tale star Chazz Palminteri is joining Ben Foster, John Travolta, Al Pacino, and Kelly Preston for the mobster movie. The relationship between John Gotti Jr. and his infamous criminal father will be the focus of the film -- one man who died for the mob and another who walked away from the wise guy world he was raised in. Palminteri will play Mafia boss Paul Castellano, who succeeded Sicilian Mafioso Carlo Gambino.

"Big Paul" Castellano quickly rose through the ranks of the Gambino crime family, but in the 1980s he became wary of another wise guy who had his eye on the prize -- John Gotti. Castellano started making waves in the family when he broke a few traditions. The Capo also threatened to snuff out anyone who was dealing drugs -- which included the ambitious Gotti -- but the crime boss was often hypocritical on that stance because of dollar signs in his eyes. After tensions with Gotti increased and other not-so-smooth moves on Castellano's part -- which were deemed disrespectful by his men -- John Gotti arranged his murder and Castellano and his bodyguard were shot to death. Gotti quickly took over the family.

Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father is being directed by TV producer and Sleepers director Barry Levinson, based on a script he co-wrote with Bugsy and Tyson writer James Toback. Filming begins January 3 in New York, where the crew may be recreating the deadly shootout that happened outside Sparks Steak House in Midtown Manhattan that took Castellano's life.
