Cannes Buzz: 'The Neon Demon' Provokes Wildly Divisive Response

The Neon Demon

Ahead of its official world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, The Neon Demon elicited wildly divisive reactions during a screening for the press yesterday.

Elle Fanning stars as a young women who moves to Los Angeles in the hopes of launching a career as a fashion model. She succeeds beyond her wildest dreams, but soon finds herself the target of women who want what she has: youth and vitality. Watch the first trailer, which establishes a certain mood and atmosphere for the horror thriller.

Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) directed; his films tend to provoke strong responses, whether positive or negative. In the hothouse atmosphere of Cannes, where more than 4,000 accredited journalists are in attendance, reactions via Twitter can be swift and sometimes brutal. Here's a sampling of those reactions.

In contrast to the noisy response in the south of France, a new and very quiet clip features Elle Fanning making an impression with her catwalking talents.

This international trailer is not safe for work, but it looks very cool.

The colorful festival poster is below. The Neon Demon will open in U.S. theaters on June 24.
