The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Nov 07, 2014

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

Furious 7

Furious 7

When a film’s first trailer busts out an action sequence this extensive and intense, the full feature’s got to have a lot of offer. Reintroducing Dom, Brian and co. by having the group parachute cars down to the ground from a plane would have been wow-worthy enough, but the sequence doesn’t end there, and it doesn’t prematurely roll into a madcap driving montage either. It gives the viewer the chance to get reacquainted with the pace, tone and main players of the franchise before revealing what they’re up against, and that makes Ian Shaw feel like more of a threat while also giving the piece a powerful build.

These are Minions we’re talking about here -- everything they say and do is inherently charming and that makes this first teaser trailer an absolute pleasure to watch. Plus, even though the jokes aren’t laugh-out-loud funny (yet), the core concept is still especially strong. Minions looking for the most despicable master in 1960s New York City? Who wouldn’t want to see the mayhem they cause?

I’ve fallen for Groot, the Boxtrolls and Baymax and now it looks as though I’ve got to add Chappie to the list as well. If you’re familiar with this column, you’re likely well aware of my thing for pets and cute creatures  -- and this first trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie definitely taps into that big time. There is something about the tone and visuals of the trailer that makes it extremely reminiscent of District 9 and Elysium, but the appeal of watching this incredibly endearing kidlike robot learn about the world is so rousing, it’s tough not to be completely taken by this promo.

Penguins of Madagascar

The first few minutes of Penguins of Madagascar played beautifully at the DreamWorks New York Comic-Con panel last month and now it makes for an excellent opening to the film’s latest trailer. It doesn’t matter if you’re a longtime fan of the penguins or not; if you’ve got a heart, you’re bound to fall for young Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and baby Private.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

I never got around to seeing The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but this new trailer for the trilogy’s third installment does entice me to catch up before the December 17 release of The Battle of the Five Armies. The visuals and fight sequences are so riveting and the trailer rocks such a powerful build that it’s impossible not to get caught up in the fight and be left eager to see how it pans out.
