The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Sep 19, 2014

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

There are quite a few noteworthy elements in this new Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 trailer, but there’s one in particular that grabs your attention the moment it starts and remains integral throughout – the score. It’s powerful, commanding and always enhances the visuals. The piece also does a stellar job of broadening the world. You think we’ve had enough Hunger Games? This trailer proves that there’s so much more of this story left to explore.

Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead

The idea of replacing Martin’s severed arm with Herzog’s is pure genius. It makes for one heck of a transition for fans of the original film and is also quite the attention-grabber for Dead Snow newcomers -- and this trailer works the concept well.  If you’re not on board after that, you won’t be at all because this promo knows its target audience and goes straight for them, delivering some outrageous scenarios, suggesting that Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead will be bigger, bloodier and exponentially more violent and ridiculous than the first one. (And it really is!)

The new trailer for Serena is a testament to Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper’s skill and charisma. As far as the narrative goes, this promo is all over the place. We get snippets of the couple’s situation, but there isn’t much of a throughline to tie it all together, nor an element to suggest that it’s a unique situation worth jumping into. However, there is something especially magnetizing about their performances, Lawrence’s in particular -- and by the end you’ll be willing to take your chances and give the full feature a go to fill in those plot holes.

The Guest

You want something unique and exhilarating that wholly embraces how wild and eccentric it is? Check out The Guest. And if you don’t want to take my word for it, check out this new “redux” trailer for The Guest first. It’s a wicked, quick-cutting character piece loaded with vibrant imagery that conveys a significant amount of story information in a highly entertaining and refined package, and expertly offers up a sense of what makes this movie a standout. Job well done to the trailer’s editor, Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisner.

Big Eyes

This isn’t exactly what one might expect from a Tim Burton film, but it's nice for a change. Burton does manage to squeeze in a little of his quintessential fantasy-horror flair, but this Big Eyes trailer is primarily a grounded, relatable character piece. It does take a little time to lose Amy Adam’s star persona and start seeing her as Margaret Keane, but as soon as the details of her predicament start pouring in, the scenario itself becomes so stimulating and engaging that everything winds up coming together, ultimately sending you on your way needing to know how Keane figures it all out.
