Agent Coulson Is the First Character Cast for Joss Whedon's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV Show

As far as big news goes, studios tend to save all of their bombshells for the San Diego Comic-Con. It seems Marvel, however, has been holding on to a rather juicy nugget to drop at the New York Comic-Con that is taking place this weekend: Agent Phil Coulson will be in Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, and, yes, he will be played by none other than Clark Gregg.

If you've seen The Avengers (and who hasn't at this point?), you no doubt know the implication there, but we don't fully know where that places the S.H.I.E.LD. show in continuity with the Marvel movieverse. Will Whedon be resurrecting Coulson for the series? Or does it take place entirely before the events of The Avengers? Whatever the case, the honchos at Marvel confirmed that Coulson was the first member cast in the series, with Whedon specifically saying "He's headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D show and always was."

The site Comic Book Resources has some pretty great coverage of the unveiling of the news, which makes us really wish we could have been there when they pulled back the curtain on this one. Still, we'll gladly settle for hearing the news and twiddling our thumbs until the day that we can see Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson once again.
