Ben Mendelsohn

In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a new villain enters the universe. His name is Orson Krennic, his job is director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial military and his disposition is always angry and sour.

As played by Ben Mendelsohn, Krennic is a prototypical villain. He is willing to stand toe to toe against any other Imperial officer, including his superiors, and is more than eager to dish out deadly punishment against any he may choose, guilty of some offense or not.

Mendelsohn's chilling performance is a timely reminder of the Australian actor's talent at capturing the very soul of the characters he plays, often as villains and/or criminals. His menacing role in Animal Kingdom led to more work in Hollywood as a bad guy.

Mendelsohn may next tackle another villainous role. He is in negotiations to join the cast of Robin Hood: Origins, according to Variety. Taron Egerton will star as the heroic Robin Hood, with Jamie Foxx set to play Little John alongside Eve Hewson as Maid Marian and Jamie Dornan as Will Scarlett. If things work out, Mendelsohn will play the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The movie promises a gritty take on the legendary tale, teasing Robin Hood as a military man who has been hardened by the Crusades and joins a revolt against a tyrannical English monarchy. We can only imagine that Mendelsohn would play an equally hardened Sheriff, a fiery character who was memorably portrayed in a different light by Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Robin Hood: Origins is currently scheduled for release on March 23, 2018.
