'Not Fade Away' Trailer: James Gandolfini Reunites with 'Sopranos' Creator for Music Drama

Oct 05, 2012

Sopranos creator David Chase has just debuted his first feature film, Not Fade Away, at the New York Film Festival today, and we’ve got the full trailer as well as some of the early critical buzz to share with you this afternoon.

Chase’s directorial debut is a semi-autobiographical tale about a group of New Jersey friends trying to start a rock band in the ‘60s. Featuring an ensemble cast led by John Magaro, Jack Huston and James Gandolfini, the film looks to cover some familiar ground (being young in the turbulent peace and love era) in some new and interesting ways. The trailer looks good – particularly when Gandolfini is around.

We’ll hold off on our personal judgment of the film until we actually get a chance to see it (our official review is coming shortly), but early critical response from our colleagues at the NYFF has been mixed. Matt Singer says "Guess I shouldn't be surprised that the guy who made one of the best TV shows in history could craft a damn good movie." His positive response is countered by this take from Katie Calautti: "The 20-minute ordeal of procuring #NYFF secret screening tickets was more intriguing than the entirety of Not Fade Away." And, of course, at least one person would have to compare the film's ending to the much-discussed closing of The Sopranos. Take it away, Stuart Weinstock! "David Chase's Not Fade Away is a lot like The Sopranos - gorgeous moments and performances, but he has no idea how to end it #NYFF"

Check out the trailer below and see if you agree. Not Fade Away will release nationwide on December 21. [via /Film]
