A grieving mother becomes the center of a bitter controversy in this documentary from filmmaker Eytan Harris. Lilith Saraph arose one morning to a horrible discovery -- her 14-year-old daughter Maytar had taken her own life, hanging herself from a tree not far from her home. While there were reasons to suspect that Maytar was being beaten by her older brother, no one knows for certain what inspired Maytar to commit suicide. The young woman's death set off a firestorm in the local media when Lilith decided she wanted to have her daughter's remains cremated. Lilith and her family live in Israel, and Jewish tradition forbids cremation; ZAKA, a Jewish activist organization best known for their humanitarian work, stepped forward to protest Lilith's decision, speaking on behalf of her late daughter. Lilith in turn made it clear she has rejected Jewish tradition in favor of her own tribal beliefs, and preferred to honor her daughter's death in her own way. Before long, reporter picked up the story and thousands across Israel began debating Lilith's rights and beliefs. Kmo Lilith (aka As Lilith) was an official selection at the 2010 Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
