Wind Blows in the Meadow Details

A woman forced into a grim marriage of convenience may find a way out thanks to a another man who loves her in this romantic drama from Iranian filmmaker Khosro Masoumi. Shooka (Elnaz Shakerdoust) is a lovely woman born into a working-class family who struggle to make ends meet. When Shooka's father is seriously injured in an accident at work, the family is thrown into desperate straits, and an opportunity is presented to them by Nasir, a wealthy man who lives nearby. Nasir's son Shokrallah has long been infatuated with Shooka, and Nasir is willing to pay her family a handsome dowry if she'd be willing to wed Shokrallah. But Shokrallah was born with Down's Syndrome, and Shooka is horrified by the notion of marrying a man she doesn't love no matter how much good it would do her family. Jalil (Hossein Abdedini) works for the local tailor and is infatuated with Shooka; he can't bear to see her pledged to a man she does not care for, and uses his position to postpone the wedding as the outfits for the event keep taking longer to complete. But Nasir and his older son Yahya become convinced something isn't right, and they're determined to make the wedding happen, no matter what. Bad dar alafzar mipic (aka Wind Blows In The Meadow) was an official selection at the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival, where it received its North American premiere. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
