Who's in It: Lesley Ann Warren, Michael Lerner, Jack Klugman, Shiri Appleby
The Basics: It's a somewhat self-consciously wacky Passover comedy in which the irascible dad gets dosed with Ecstasy, and his high is so nice that he makes peace with the son he stopped talking to. So it's both pro-God and pro-recreational drug use. Which is kind of a first, if you don't count 24 Hour Party People.
What's the Deal? This is the kind of movie that people who read Jewlicious.com or Heeb magazine will totally get, and the rest of us will still think it's pretty funny even if most of the specifically Semitic stuff goes right over our dumb heads. In my case, it's a dumb, white-trash, Southern Baptist head (FYI).
Why It Doesn't Suck: Because even though it's a predictable family comedy, it takes some unpredictable turns getting to the "We love each other!" ending. And it'll make you laugh, which automatically places it in a small percentile of comedies.
Coolest Déjà Vu Moment: Meredith Scott Lynn, who played the uptight lesbian in Legally Blonde, is back playing basically the same person in this one. It's like that character got to be in her own movie.
Subtitles Please: Jack Klugman, bless him, has almost totally lost his voice. It's difficult to understand his dialogue. But if you're too young to remember who he even is, he won't sound diminished at all. Just old.
