The Basics: The Dixie Chicks didn't invent this stuff — other pop stars with unpopular opinions got hung out to dry first. This one was a Beatle. And then he became an antiwar activist during the Vietnam era. So he became an enemy of the state. Files on him, surveillance, deportation attempts. The whole thing.
What's the Deal? There are plenty of politically minded celebrities, but how many of them have the intelligence and charm to wear their causes on their sleeves without coming off like opportunistic fakers? Bruce Springsteen maybe. Susan Sarandon. Even Cher seems pretty for-real when she calls C-SPAN live and starts spouting off. But that's how tough it is. John Lennon was one of those guys.
Hippie Nonsense: OK, yes, there's footage of the bed-in things he and Yoko did, which read kind of ridiculous if you're not down with the performance-art background that Ono has. But as a protest, it's still a lot cooler than chanting, "Hey-hey, ho-ho, [fill in what you don't want]'s got to go."
Fair and Balanced: It's a movie that's 100 percent on Lennon's side. You can call it an editorial doc if you want. So if you're looking for commentary from Ann Coulter or someone, that's for another day.
