Who's in It: Simon Baker, Winona Ryder, Leslie Bibb, Patton Oswalt, Tanc Sade, Mindy Cohn, Dash Mihok
The Basics: Baker is an about-to-be-married man who gets a mysterious e-mail with the names of every person he's ever had sex with and the names of every person he ever will have sex with, totaling 101. So he ditches his fiancée to get started on the remaining names. Meanwhile, Ryder is a sexual serial killer named Death Nell who's on a collision course with the list-holder.
What's the Deal? Black comedy is tough, because what was boundary-pushing even 10 years ago isn't quite as dark or funny when seen with eyes trained in 2008. So when you're the guy who wrote Heathers, a movie that still holds up after two decades, and brought the world the lines "F--- me gently with a chainsaw" and "I love my dead gay son," you have to keep bringing it. There's not a single line that good here or even a funny scene that capitalizes on the title's sex-and-death mashup. Worse? It all goes soft and cuddly by the end.
"My Teen Angst Bulls--- Has a Body Count": Just so you know, Ryder is not the star. She's the subplot. She's great when she's onscreen. It reminds you of how much you like her in movies, even more than you like her for being a wacky shoplifter of expensive designer clothes. But then she disappears for long stretches of time. Cohn, Natalie from The Facts of Life, has more screen time here.
Who Saves Every Moment He's In: Comedian Oswalt (he was also the voice of the main rat in Ratatouille) as an omniscient "angel" who seems to have just been let loose to say whatever he felt like coming up with in his scenes, which are, again, sadly, few.
Pedigree, Part Two: Writer/director Daniel Waters is also responsible for writing the miserable Andrew Dice Clay movie The Adventures of Ford Fairlane and the not-as-awful-as-they-say Bruce Willis movie Hudson Hawk.
