Semi-Pro

Movie Info and Showtimes Posted on: Sep. 16, 2008 Release Date: Feb. 29, 2008

Semi-Pro Grade: D
Who's in It: Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, André Benjamin, Maura Tierney, Andrew Daly, Will Arnett, David Koechner, Rob Corddry, Jackie Earle Haley

The Basics: Has-been '70s pop star and basketball player Jackie Moon (Ferrell) has to get his team of losers and misfits to fourth place in the ABA before it merges with the NBA or risk seeing the team dissolved. "Is dissolve even a word?" asks Ferrell, doing his usual moronic, ego-mad man-child thing. And the answer is, of course, yes, and it's the word that also describes the diminishing returns of Ferrell-plays-a-sport comedies.

What's the Deal? Guess what's not funny anymore? The '70s. That '70s Show is off the air. Anchorman is already a few years old. Boogie Nights is even older. The first Brady Bunch Movie was released 13 years ago. You can't get away with being so lazy that you think that bell-bottom polyester pants alone are going to bring the laughs. Example: There's actually a scene in this of two guys just playing Pong. Nothing more than that. They're just playing it. No commentary. Isn't that a riot? If you said "yes," then you deserve to throw your money away on a ticket.

Why It's Your Fault: You didn't go see Stranger Than Fiction, Winter Passing or Melinda and Melinda. I mean, yes, Melinda and Melinda was crap, too, but still. The man needs encouragement to try new things. He won't do it alone.

List of People Wasted in Go-Nowhere Tiny Roles and Cameos: The Daily Show's Ed Helms, SNL's Kristen Wiig, Andy Richter, Patti LaBelle

What I Really Want to Know: How it feels to be Haley, whose career revival has quickly gone from Oscar nomination to taking minor roles in terrible adult rehashes of The Bad News Bears, a film he already co-starred in as a kid.
