Who's in It: Mo'Nique, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Eric Roberts
The Basics: Mo'Nique is fat. This we know. And here's what we also know: She doesn't care what you think about that. Meanwhile, here's a movie that would like you to believe that she's down on herself for her size and has to learn how to believe in her value as a woman. I hope some fries come with this stupid burger.
What's the Deal? Worst of all, it's a trick! The trailer shows her being sassy and putting people in their place for dissing her. And 90 percent of the actual film is about how she wishes she were a size five. Until the end, of course, when she shows everyone that she's big and beautiful. Oh, wait, there's one more Worst of All: None of this is funny. It's basically a movie about Mo'Nique that's the opposite of everything she is.
Thin Plot Disorder: To wrench things into going Mo's way, the script takes her on a trip to Palm Springs, which is apparently the only city in the world where bodybuilding doctors meet plus-sized women and love them for who they really are. That's what happens here. Of course, in real life, Palm Springs is home to a population that's about 80 percent middle-aged gay men and lots and lots of senior citizens. But the movie is hoping you don't know that already.
Production Budget = 35 Cents This movie is so ugly
OK, I'm just quoting the trailer. Anyway, this movie looks like it was shot on a tourist-quality VHS home camcorder and then blown up to film stock. It's grainy, blurry and lit with fluorescent bulbs that make everyone green. And I counted at least four extras staring straight into the camera.
And Another Thing: Why is it OK for Mo to be fat but not the men she finds attractive in the film?
