Papa's Song Details

FULL SYNOPSIS

The oft-strained ties of family and the sometimes difficult state of race relations in Holland provide the backdrop for this drama, which concerns two Curaco siblings living in Holland. Magda (Lisette Merenciana) is a singer who is married to Hugo (Victor Bottenbly), a musician in her band; while they've enjoyed their share of popular success, their relationship is often combative, and the two are currently separated as Magda tries to pull her career out of a slump. Her sister Shirley (Romana Vrede) is married happily to Nico (Rene van Asten), who has a well-respected career as a judge. Like many siblings, Magda and Shirley love each other while often fighting like cats and dogs; their relationship is strained by the fact that Shirley cares for Magda's two sons when Magda is on the road, while Shirley, who loves children, is unable to conceive. Shirley has come to believe that Magda isn't an especially good role model for her own children, and has decided she's no longer willing to give them up; eventually, Shirley is persuaded to return the boys to their mother, but as a sort of compromise, Magda agrees to act as a surrogate mother for a child to be fathered by Nico. While Nico is somewhat uneasy with this suggestion, Hugo is nothing short of livid when he hears of it, bringing the tensions between all parties concerned to a head. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
