Zombieland Review

3.0

Zombies. They're still really popular.

Who's In It: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin

The Basics: The zombies came and took over. There are barely any humans left. So four survivors load up the truck and they move to Beverly. Hills, that is. To an amusement park that's supposed to be free of undead cannibals. Along the way the narrator, Eisenberg (doing his best to not be seen as the guy you get when you can't get Michael Cera), explains his OCD rules for avoiding becoming zombie lunch. Sworn to anonymity in a survival-at-all-costs environment, the four travelers eventually come to know and love each other like a family, just a family whose collective hobby is crushing zombie skulls.

What's The Deal: Okay, so you've seen the five dozen zombie movies that have come out in recent years. And you've seen excellent zombie comedy like this before in Shaun of the Dead. And you arthouse-goers probably saw Fido or Otto: Or, Up With Dead People or Chopper Chicks in Zombietown. There's nothing really that new under the sun with zombies now. Furthermore, between all that and the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies coming out of leftfield to become a bestseller, you'd think that zombie saturation would have set in by now. And it has. But... this movie is pretty dang funny. I laughed all the way through it (minus the icky "we're a family" sentimentality crud near the end). So my fed-up-ness with the genre has been temporarily put on hold.

Sure, You're Reading This Review, But: I'd advise against reading most of the other ones. In fact, don't even check the cast list on IMDb if you can help it. Because people who review movies don't always warn you when they're going to spoil something cool. And I bet a lot of the other ones out there are going to ruin a very funny surprise that happens about midway through. It involves a big Hollywood actor and it's worth going in without any information. Just do as I say here.

Oh, One More Thing: Stay until the end of the credits. You won't be sorry.
