Smart, mature romantic dramedy has adult situations, sex.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Your Sister's Sister is an independently produced romantic dramedy with smart characters, rich situations, and a lot of mature material, starting with sexual situations. A sex scene between a straight main and a lesbian woman is shown from beginning to end; there's no graphic nudity, but the scene has a big impact on the rest of the story, and other sex talk and sexual situations follow. Language is also strong, with liberal use of "f--k" and "s--t" throughout. A scene of excessive drinking contributes to the plot, and there's additional social drinking. Characters argue, but otherwise violence isn't an issue. This is a grown-up movie, but mature teens may enjoy it.
- Families can talk about Your Sister's Sister drinking scene. Why are the characters drinking so much? Do they regret it? Are the consequences of their choices realistic?
- Are any of these characters role models? What do they do that's admirable, and what do they do that's not so admirable?
- Why would Jack agree to have sex with Hannah when he didn't love her? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.
The good stuff
-
Educational value:
The movie makes a case for telling the truth by showing how awful things can turn out after lying. Eventually, when the characters tell the truth with one another, they find a new understanding and empathy for each other.
-
Messages: Your Sister's Sister makes a case for telling the truth by showing how awful things can turn out after lying. Eventually, when the characters finally tell the truth, they find a new understanding and empathy for one another.
-
Role models: These characters are ordinary people who try to do the right thing but sometimes fail in their efforts -- while trying to protect one another's feelings. Their flaws make them more interesting, but although they're realistic, they're not necessarily people you'd want to emulate.
What to watch for
-
Violence: Characters argue from time to time, but these arguments come from genuine emotional places and don't seem excessively violent or frightening.
-
Sex: A man and a woman have sex after a night of drinking. There's no graphic nudity, but the sex act is shown from beginning to end; safe sex is practiced. Also heavy sex talk throughout, as well as some sexual situations.
-
Language: Characters use strong language frequently but not constantly. Words include "f--k" and "s--t," as well as "piss," "bush," "d--k," etc.
-
Consumerism: Not an issue
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Two adult characters drink tequila excessively in an early scene, which leads to a night of sex and several awkward situations. Some mild social drinking throughout the rest of the movie.

Friends, sisters and love don't mix by pedsarq
This is a touching movie about friends, lovers, and sister who fill each other's lives with chaos only to turn it into fulfillment. Emily Blunt plays the sister who secretly loves a friend who's an emotional wreck. She offers him the family cabin for some R&R not knowing that her sister is shacked up there dealing with a tough breakup. As luck would have it, her friend and sister get it on and she's gets crushed. The rest of the movie is spent repairing the relationship with her friend and sister. This movie is well executed and the characters are nicely developed. It's an emotional time at the movies, but in a good way. I recommend it.

It was ok by snshelley
The guy in the triangle was not believable as a love interest. It was funny in parts but it would be a better rental than a $10 movie.

A supercilious, insignificant, "like-infested" film about 30 -something's with too much time on their hands by Peneflix
A supercilious, insignificant, "like-infested" film about 30 -something's with too much time on their hands; not enough intellectual substance, just aimless individuals who have reached a hiatus, a cavernous lacuna that overwhelms them, stymieing their decision -making process or powers. Loss, love, grief are experienced by all; how you deal with the vicissitudes in life make you the person you are. Not holding my breath or anxiously anticipating the onset of maturity for these, not unlikeable, but far from galvanizing individuals...
The title alone was a troublesome clue, foreshadowing a bland, uninteresting scenario; but optimism is my Achilles heel and I gave it a shot. On the plus side it is very short; fortuitously I only purchased a small popcorn and coke; so for a fraction over an hour I sipped, chewed and groaned through this supposedly unique love triangle. So regretted the temporary hiatus of my "Cassandra" gene...
ONE & 3/4 STARS!

Sisters by Singleman442000
Worst excuse for a movie I have ever seen, better acting in a high school play, characters were poorly scripted, used the F word too frequently when it didn't fit in the sentence, boring, story line copuld have been good but the characterization and and script were horrible,,,, wasted evening

Love Emily Blunt by rahamblett1
Why, oh why did every other word have to be F**K? Premise for movie was good, acting was raw, location beautiful, but honestly I realized early on that the characters were a little screwed up without needing a ten minute F**K dialogue.

Emotional deliciousness. Emily Blunt should gain #1 ranking in the near future.
