Yellow Submarine Review

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

OK for kids 7+

Beatles classic with great animation, music.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that although rumors suggest that songs like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" are veiled references to drugs and the animation sometimes has a psychedelic look, there is nothing that remotely approaches drug or alcohol use of any kind. The violence is extremely mild, especially by cartoon standards. The Meanies take over by "bonking" people with green apples.

  • Families can talk about the different ways to interpret this movie -- do you think there are hidden messages? Why do you think the Beatles wanted to make this movie?

I did not pay for Digital Projection - I have that at home by octobus1
Yellow Submarine is a great film - that's a given. But the way it was shown has nothing to do with professionalism. It is the result of the campaign to ultimately eliminate 35mm prints. The bright level may be close to a 35mm projector but it's not the same. Color saturation was at about 50 percent. The sound from the digital projector consistently dropped track elements (dialogue or sound effect or orchestral score...). And, once again after all the great work completed to restore the film (visible online but not here) the image's top and bottom are cropped off. To continue the pretense that every movie ever made fits the current HDTV ratio. They test this system on re-releases because they wouldn't dare try it on a new film and endure the demand for refunds.

Loved it on the big screen by innerrevolution7
Loved everything about seeing it on the big screen, and with a theatre full of Beatle fans. Was surprised how many teenagers were there. Great psychedelic movie. Timeless music. Fun experience on the big screen!!
