All the words that follow assault the ear in this unnecessary rehashing of the earthy virtues of low-paid laborers versus the stiffness of the bourgeoisie.

Lighter than a meringue and as insubstantial, the French boulevard comedy The Women on the 6th Floor was designed for the gentle laughter it easily earns.

Mr. Luchini has a touching way of opening up the repressed heroes he often plays, and Ms. Verbeke's droll manipulations - and genuine sweetness - are more than enough to justify the transformation that María and the other maids work on Jean-Louis's life.

The French have a knack for it. They've been making funny and agreeable movie farces for forever, and seeing The Women on the 6th Floor makes you hope they'll never stop.

women of the 6th floor by kentridge
While I truly think its more fun to be rich than poor, the sweet way that that our upstairs ladies' joie de vivre transforms our downstairs patron (boss)is heartwarming. The film also, highlights, as an aside, the influx of first Spanish workers to take on low wage jobs then alludes to the next wave, the Portuguese workers who flood into France, England and other countries to take their place. The political issues are not explored. This is a romance, exquisitely filmed, a pure enjoyment for the Christmas season.

Charming French comedy by wellsgirl
Women on the 6th Floor was thoroughly enjoyable, with subtle humor and good taste. A very bourgeois French husband suddenly discovers there is another way to do things (the Spanish way!) and it turns his life upside down - all right there in his apartment building, but up on the 6th floor, where the maids live. He forms lovely friendships with all of them and falls in love with one... We loved this movie!
