Earnest and understated, Weekend has the intimate look and feel of a two-character stage play that has been opened up -- but only slightly, with minimal addition of supporting players -- for a mostly faithful filmization.

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

This is a smart, sensitive, perceptive film, with actors well suited to the dialogue. It underlines the difficulty of making connections outside our individual boxes of time and space.

Naturalistic without being ineloquent, heartfelt yet unsentimental, Weekend is the rarest of birds: a movie romance that rings true.

So much movie can be made with so little plot, given sufficient humanity and dramatic tension. That's the case with Andrew Haigh's eloquent chamber piece.

There is also a need for stories that address the complex entanglements of love and sex honestly, without sentiment or cynicism and with the appropriate mixture of humor, sympathy and erotic heat. Weekend, Andrew Haigh's astonishingly self-assured, unassumingly profound second feature, is just such a film.

British filmmaker Andrew Haigh's background in editing (from Gladiator to Mister Lonely) is evident in the casual beauty of moments that only appear "found," giving Weekend an engrossing documentary feel.

don't believe the glowing, positive reviews by rloretan
very slow moving, too much stereotypical gay drug use, heavy indiscernible accents at times, and just dull.....nothing new we havent seen before

What could have been a great film is merely "good." by BIGAPPLESAVINGS
For some strange reason, the screenwriter has chosen to write a story where the two main characters seem to be drunk or stoned throughout the entire plot. This only serves to undermine the significance of the emotional bond which is the core of the story. It makes the characters seem emotionally retarded. While the two men happen to be gay, the critics have made much of the universal significance of two strangers meeting by chance and falling in love. Unfortunately, the theme of drugs and alcohol plays to a lot of stereotypes about the emotional health of gay people. The impact of the story would have been far more significant if it had occurred without a crutch of alcohol and drugs. As a gay person myself, I appreciate story lines that feature gay characters but this film does nothing to portray us as healthy people.
