Emotional immigration drama has mature themes.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this drama has some mature and emotionally difficult themes. It revolves around a young boy who must deal with his grandmother's (peaceful) death and an illegal border crossing between Mexico and the United States. There are some brief images of obvious prostitutes, an abusive pimp, and a twitchy junkie. Expect some mild (though potentially upsetting) violence in the form of chases and rough takedowns by INS agents and local L.A. police. The central boy is also threatened by bullies, thieves, and a child trafficker. Mostly mild language, though "s--t" is used.
- Families can talk about how the movie portrays the plight of illegal immigrants in the United States. Do you think the movie is trying to make a specific point about the issue? If so, what is it? Is it OK that Carlitos and his mother are both breaking American laws? Why or why not?
What to watch for
-
Violence: Harrowing images of border crossing. Border guards chase illegal immigrants; INS authorities chase and grab illegal workers; a policeman beats an apparent criminal. Police drag away Enrique, pushing him against the cruiser and handcuffing him roughly. A child finds his grandmother dead in her bed and is very sad.
-
Sex: Several women wear sundresses or close-fitting tops that show cleavage. A pimp appears on the sidewalk with prostitutes (they wear skimpy outfits and high heels).
-
Language: Words include "s--t" (with "bull-"), "hell," "son of a bitch," and "damn."
-
Consumerism: Brands include PopTarts, Walkman.
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: Cigarette smoking. A junkie character's arms show track marks, indicating past drug use. Bullies drink beer.

Not all good mexican movies need Gael to succed, great, great surprise. by Gargoldeth
I understand most of the people who come to this site are not hispanics, and because of that everybody is posting the " don't care" deal.
I'm not gonna try and address inmigration subjects on this forum but I will say this: This movie is intelligent,non-predictable and straight out funny.
It will make you cry and I don't care if you have a heart of stone, it WILL move you.
And unlike 10,000 b.c. for example , you will come out of the theatre completely satisfied that you went and saw it.
Definetly up there with any good holliwood / international movie. I hate it when people clap their hands at the end of a good show, but this time I joined the ovation.
10 out of 10..

HOW COME U DON'T CARE? U CARED ENOUGH TO BE HERE POSTING...SO DONT BE CYNICAL! by ahumanbeing
" ***** " OH LORD, JESUS, POPE, OR WHOEVER YOU WANT TO RELY ON TO SOUND BELIEVABLE...
People, and let me say it again, P-E-O-P-L-E, please don't give up your ability to believe that you can actually go in and come out of a screening without finding new meanings or reconsidering your level of empathy for other human beings. Suspend your thoughts about immigration laws and do not feel LESS to ignore the club of the hearts of stone and selfish brains who here just want to stress that this POWERFUL AND EVOCATIVE film is only in theaters to justify illegals.
This movie may be somewhat predictable for some, extremely unrealistic for others, or just too much of a "melodrama" for a person who probably has always had a bed, cereal, and his or her parents at the end of every day but that is the beauty of watching movies...WE ALL EITHER LEARN FROM THEM, CONSIDER NEW MEANINGS TO DIFFERENT THINGS, OR JUST GET DISTRACTED IN VAIN.
By watching this film I confirm I'm not empty; I care.

I saw this movie on Wed. 3/19 here in my home town Fresno Ca. This movie is great it made me laugh, cry and think. It has a story which alot of us Hispanics can related. Eugenio gave this movie a great touch I cannot imagen another actor for this part that would have gave us this out come. Kate and the kid gave it the story of Love between Mother and Son. Overall I loved it.
Thanks,
Byruthy

Great Movie by elecortez
Only if you don't have a heart and a mind you would find this boring or not interested. This movie exploits issues average American Citizens think they know but they really don't. It is unaccurate to say that it exploits stereotypes because all it does is expose a reality. I you are into crude killing and unintelligent gory films don't bother to wathc, if you have a healthy open mind you would enjoy being exposed into the life of those less fortunate.

A really sincere movie about a mother and son's love. What a child will do to reconnect with his mom and the sacrifices a poor woman is forced to make for her son. Very touching and sensitive!

It was a great movie. Well done all the way around. And the story is compelling in that it gives people who do not understand the immigrant experience that opportunity to see one little slice of what people go through. The acting is great. I hope it gets more attention from the mainstream.

Absolutely genuine. My thirteen year old was in tears. She and her girlfriend loved it. This movie is a wonderful film to watch with the family. I highly recommend it.
