Love heals in mature, melodramatic marriage dramedy.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this well-intentioned dramedy -- though big on universal and age-blind subjects of forgiveness, friendship and love -- addresses plenty of mature themes, including infidelity, divorce, domestic abuse, unemployment, and death. There’s some social drinking, though little swearing and nudity. Some jokes are based on male and female stereotypes, and one character’s raging jealousy is played for laughs when it’s actually quite dysfunctional.
- Families can talk about stereotypes. What kinds of stereotypes does this movie set out to overcome, and which does it reinforce?
- Talk about the challenges that each couple faces: Do they seem real orexaggerated for effect? Can one learn from them? If so, what are the lessons?
- What is the message of the movie? What binds these couples together and what sets them apart?
The good stuff
-
Messages: Tyler Perry’s characters are all too human, but for each of them, redemption is possible. His movies remind viewers of that we’re all fallible, but it’s in our power to change. Perry shares his usual spiritual message -- that love matters more than physical and material temptation -- but tones down the preachiness here. Still, there are many jokes told at the expense of spouses and partners, and some gender stereotyping, too. (Men should provide for their women, for instance, as if women can't fend for themselves. And this despite some of the characters being successful in their own right.)
-
Role models: Women of all shapes and sizes are portrayed as beautiful, and they’re almost all committed to the idea of marriage as a demanding, but worthwhile pursuit. Still, one woman seems to relish emasculating her husband, and her rage-filled, jealousy-fueled (though offbase) rants are depicted as hilarious, when they’re actually emotionally exhausting and demeaning. She drinks too much, too, though this isn’t explored. Two characters forget how much they care about each other and move their relationship into physically abusive territory while going through a divorce. Another woman betrays her husband by flirting inappropriately and becoming emotionally involved with another man.
What to watch for
-
Violence: Two men trade barbs over a woman. A woman recalls how her ex-husband used to hit her and demean her. A man throws a plant through a door, torches a photo album, manhandles his soon-to-be-ex-wife and argues with her loudly; she, in kind, attempts to bite him and uses a golf club to obliterate every glassy object in their home. Another couple bickers constantly.
-
Sex: Some kissing and caressing. Many references to men cheating. A woman conducts an emotional affair. A couple's amorous doings can be heard by a neighbor. Some cleavage shots.
-
Language: Words like "ass" and "damn" and "bitch." The N-word is used once (not heatedly).
-
Consumerism: Some brands visible (Range Rover, for example, and Heineken).
-
Drinking, drugs and smoking: One character is often drinking (out of a flask, ordering shots), but aside from a few jokes, it's not addressed. Others indulge in social drinking. A character mentions smoking pot in the past. Jokes about crack.

TO BE HONEST.... by lovestalentmoviefan
...this one wasn't as good as other Tyler Perry productions. I give my MUST GO and financial support because of the principles this man is bold and talented enough to stand on. Now for the movie. Angela would have been more real and believable if she wasn't "all screaming--all the time". Just too much. Janet Jackson was fine when she was upset, but aside from those scenes, she was stilted. I think that the problem was too many stories to really make one of them awesome,as is usually the case. Still very good and still will spend more money here.

WHAT A BREATH OF FRESH AIR by keatsgirl
Hi Fan Friends! We had time for a couple of movies this week and my guy picked Hot Tub.We both were disgusted, but kept watching because we are J.Cusack fans. We felt just plain yucky afterwards. Even him,who has broader opinions than I do regarding raunchy movies. My pick was T.P.!!! And we both loved it,and the good messages and tasteful comedy that you can depend on with this man. Felt as some others that the ending was too rushed, and IMHOJ.jackson is not very good.Yelling and screaming is something anyone can do,and it was an emotional time in her real life. Other than her tantrums, she was distant and not convincing of anything. Just don't get what everyone is saying about how she was so great. ....Still think it is a great movie and we will spend the money more than once in support of clean, yet fun and realistic, theater movies. bye

I loved this so much! by LTMF 2
Just got back from my third viewing of this movie. This time I took my 24 daughter, and she was impressed. I said in my first review that I thought J.Jackson was too stilted until she got to her upset scenes, but now I realize her character is like that. Holding things in,until she can't take it anymore...so she played it very well, and I am happy to admit I was wrong. I am so impressed with T.Perry work and boldness and talent....could go on and on. Lots of great insight that people who can't or won't go to counseling for can get.And of course the opportunity to let us see belief in God being portrayed positively. Criticisms are few. First- Angela..nice part, but overplayed to where it can distract from the story. Second-Troy seemed to have a little trouble acting in a couple of group scenes, and third- the strange ending was really incongruent ,after witnessing Patricia's rage and what eventually happened. Still will spend more money to support Mr. Perry's faithful work.

Why Did I Get Married Too? by avann1203
I thought that the movie was very good. The actors were good especially Janet's role in the movie I thought that it was like her coming out party. The only problem i had with the movie was the ending because I thought that it was very dry and lame but overall it was a great movie for everyone especially married couples.

Why Did I Get Married Too? by sgcastille
This was a very good movie. The cast of actors and acting was superb. I really liked the wardrobe...very stylish and it reflected their personalities as well. This is a great movie for married couples, those who are thinking of getting married and especially those who are in relationships and are having a difficult time. The story was excellent and so true to life. I wish every couple had a support system of friends. It was nice to see "sisters" helping and sticking by one another...we need more movies about positive examples of relationships and restoration of relationships. Thanks to all for a great job.
