Horror standbys like mangled corpses and stone-faced children pop up regularly, but sibling directors Charles and Thomas Guard haven't quite nailed the genre's rhythms.

Without dwelling on the limited abilities of novice British filmmakers Tom and Charles Guard (a.k.a. the Guard Brothers) -- who seem to have divvied up duties here by having one sibling focus exclusively on close-up shots of doorknobs and the other oversee everything else -- the movie's fatal flaw is the undeveloped relationship between the two sisters.

Weak even by the standard of uninspired recent Asian-horror remakes, The Uninvited is more likely to induce snickers and yawns than shudders and yelps.

The plot borrows as freely from Hitchcock and Henry James as from the Bard of Avon, and doesn't make scrupulous sense, though I'd have to see the film again, which I won't do, to make sure it doesn't cheat.

The main problem with The Uninvited lies in its refusal to decide just what movie it wants to be a commercial for. It certainly doesn't have much in common with "A Tale of Two Sisters," the creepy Korean horror film of which it is supposedly a remake.

Emily Browning's face helps The Uninvited work so well...She makes you fear for her, and that's half the battle. Yet she's so fresh she's ready for a Jane Austen role.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 15+

American remake of Korean horror film is violent but dull.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this moody supernatural horror movie is very gory and violent, with everything from mutilated corpses and lots of flowing blood to contorted human bodies speaking and moving. The story revolves around a widowed father whose daughters object to his relationship with the woman who nursed their dying mother; the film doesn't explore this at great length, but it provides a sexual subplot that runs through the film. The main character has been institutionalized after a breakdown; the movie also includes teen drinking, strong language (including "f--k" and "s--t") and references to sex.

  • Families can talk about the central plot point -- what challenges do families face after the death of a parent? How does this movie exaggerate some of those real-life issues? Do you think it's trying to send a particular message?
  • Why ar Asian horror films so popular asmaterial for Hollywood remakes. How does their typical style of violence differ from other kinds of horror movies?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: No positive messages to speak of. Expect extensive discussion of terminal/mental illness, violence, and murder.

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: No notable positive role models. A stepmother is cruel to her mentally fragile stepdaughter (and may be guilty of much worse).

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: Extensive horror violence, blood, and gore, with slashing, stabbing, and fighting. Mutilated, disfigured, and burnt bodies appear to the main character as apparitions. Knives and hypodermics are brandished as weapons. A character is seen being pulled form the water, dead. A character has wrist scars from a suicide attempt. Characters manifest supernatural deformities before threatening the main character.

  • sex false3

Sex: A young man kissing a young woman says "I love you ... and I have a condom." A daughter references how her father and his girlfriend are having sex "three times a night." Lovemaking noises are heard. A brief sex scene leaves much to the imagination while still conveying the facts of the matter. Two characters rooting through a woman's things find and discuss her vibrator. Some additional kissing.

  • language false3

Language: One non-sexual use of "f---ed," as well as "ass," "a--hole," "s--t," "goddamn," "bitch," and "bitchy."

  • consumerism false0

    Consumerism: Not an issue

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false2

Drinking, drugs and smoking: A teen character makes several references to excessive drinking: "I'm working off my hangover," "It's going to take a lot of alcohol to get through this," and so on.

Don't listen to the other reviews: by photography4lif3
I thought 'The Uninvited' was a good movie. I jumped a few times and there were scary parts! Yes the twist ending was strange, I didn't find it as confusing as all the other reviewers wrote though. You have to play very close attention to every single part in the movie because they are all hints.

Just okay. by andrealorelei
The acting was definetely good, and there were a few scream worthy moments, but overall it was just okay. The story line was decent, although a bit confusing at times, until the end that is. The "surprise-ending" was definitely surprising, but as soon as it was revealed, I began my trademark eye roll. The ending was just too much like so many movie endings I have already seen. 'A Tale of Two Sisters' and 'High Tension' come immediately to mind, although I'm sure I could come up with at least a couple more similar endings, like 'Secret Window' and 'Hide and Seek'. Like I said,"All too familiar".

The Uninvited by Aimoives13jm
The title did not make a lot of sense to me. BUT! this movie made you think and it was a great psychological thriller. It's really good, well acted, well portrayed, and is by far one of the best remakes of any asian horror. Anyway, great movie, i suggest you all see it.

Better Then Expected by OriginalMovieWatcher
I don't want to give out too much, but the movie was better then I expected. It wasn't great, but it wasn't THAT bad either. Got like two scares. I noticed around me the theatre really WASN'T that into it, no screams or covering eyes. Same for me, I just sat through it hoping for something to happen, which didn't really give off. The ending has a suspensful twist, which I appreciated something out of it. Like I said, it wasn't that bad, but I'd wait for rental.

Wasn't Scary... Buuuuttttt.... by Possibly_Xiclaly
I found that the Uninvited wasn't scary, but the story behind itself was awesome. The ending was truly shocking. I think you that if you like weird and shocking twists in movies, you would enjoy this film. But, if you were just watching it to be spooked... don't waste your money.

crazy chick by mayhem13
This is a very good suspense movie. Some of the "scary" scenes are obvious before they happen. Despite this drawback the movie will still manage to make your girl clinch your arm from time to time. Every movie has some type of twist that changes your perspective of the story, The Uninvited has a twist that I never expected. Im a big movie person and I never saw it coming. The twist is so good it will blow your mind. It will make you think about the entire movie all over again so you can see its true. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good scare and an interesting story.

Better than expected. by brendon_c
So I went into this movie with my friends thinking it would be another bad asian horror remake. The cast sounded promising, but the plot seemed like it would be cliched or something. After watching the movie, i was surprised. This is an exceptional horror/suspense movie that is so much better than much of the crap Hollywood has recently been throwing up. People say it was too confusing. I disagree. It really wasn't hard to figure out at all. There are just so many simple minded people out there. Overall, this movie was good. Acting wasn't perfect, but that was expected. The Uninvited is definitely different from The Grudge or The Ring. And in my opinion, definitely better.
