No belief on earth can rescue Swank from a film that's a chain of disaster chintz masquerading as a sermon.

The only remotely notable thing about this particular jumble of boos, bangs and door creaks...is that it tries to wed the horror trend with the heated-up God market.

The seeds of most Biblical horror movies are sown in the Book of Revelations; The Reaping at least gets marks for originality for springing from Exodus.

Revisiting the book of Exodus in a feverish Southern-gothic context, this lurid, often ludicrously entertaining slab of Biblesploitation builds an earnest case for spirituality in a skeptical age.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 16+

Violent thriller has dark religious themes.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this ominous, religious-themed thriller has lots of violent scenes, many involving children. Images include a river of blood, dead fish and frogs (some beset by maggots and flies), dead children's bodies and bones, a rape scene (cut into close ups and made confusing because the victim is drugged), the ritual sacrifice of children, scary shadows in creaky houses, faces covered with oozy boils, bloody walls and floors, a mural of a lynching, suicide, locusts attacking men, and flames shooting from the sky. Characters discuss faith and skepticism, and there's a little bit of drinking and some swearing (including at least one "f--k").

  • Families can talk about how the film uses scary "religious" imagery. In general, what messages does the movie send about faith and religion? Can you think of other horror movies that deal with religious issues? Why do the two often go hand in hand? Families can also discuss how the movie simplifies the split between religious faith and science (for instance, in the explanation of miracles).

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: A former missionary rediscovers her faith via signs from the devil -- a route that involves multiple deaths, a cult that sacrifices children, rape, and suicide.

What to watch for
  • violence false5

Violence: Several jump scenes in dark places; flashback scenes show sweaty, delirious poisoned Chilean villagers as well as angry Sudanese villagers dying of starvation and attacking white missionaries; images of dead fish and frogs in a river of blood and flies and maggots on fish; a dead boy's body (desiccated and creepy) appears several times; deranged cows attack a truck; scary point-of-view explorations of a dark house, a basement, and the woods; a nightmarish rape scene is intercut with a painful flashback; a scary "African" figure appears behind or near Katherine a few times; a woman commits suicide with handgun (off screen, though her body falls in the next shot); men are attacked by a swarm of locusts; discovery of skulls, bones, and bodies in a crypt; flames from the sky; a child is tied to table and threatened with ritual sacrifice (she screams); people with guns and knives threaten a young girl; a man grabs a woman and threatens her with a knife as they are swirled up in flames.

  • sex false3

Sex: Katherine wears tight tops; during a nightmarish, fragmented rape scene, sweaty body parts and her face appear in close-up.

  • language false3

Language: At least one use of "f--k," plus other language ("s--t," "damn," etc.).

  • consumerism false0

    Consumerism: Mac PowerBook.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Beer drinking, homebrew drinking (which leads to Katherine's seeming hallucination), character carries a cigar.

Great plot twists by rljules
This movie has an good way of twisting one way and then another. It shifts so quickly that at times it's hard to keep up with it. I had a little difficulty keeping with the story due to the continual shifts. Although the ending is especially twisted, it does an excellent job of bringing everything together and leaving an opening for a sequel. Don't know if they'll make one, but there s definitely potential. This movie actually falls more into the horror/suspense genre than I originally thought. Regardless it is a good movie to see and I advise you don't bring any youngsters or those that are weak of heart.

several solid scares by basstheplimp
I saw this movie with my cousin on a rainy monday afternoon, and maybe the glum weather helped set me up; but while I was expecting more of a "wow that is some wierd crazy stuff" type of movie, my cousin and I both found ourselves frightened as jumpy thrills litter the theatre (we were the only ones there). Hilary Swank does a great job, and even though you may think you have ideas as to where the plot is leading, the ending is a wacky twist that made the whole movie that much more worthwhile.

Only for the patient by Orangecooler
The Reaping had some good unpredictible scares that make the audience jump. The suspense was there. It was, however, quite slow moving while the director tried to build a story. The male assistant's character was under-utilized as a god-fearing man and his back story was fantastic, especially in light of Hillary Swank's character. The flashback at the end tells the viewer that the filmmakers knew that some of the audience wouldn't get the ending.
