For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 16+

Anything-goes comic raunch-fest is funny, but not for kids.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this raunchy comedy is packed with over-the-top, crude language and sexual jokes/innuendo from beginning to end. No bodily function is left unreported; no serious issue is safe from the lowest forms of humor. Expect a constant stream of racial slurs, fat jokes, outrageous come-ons, and religious send-ups. Interspersed with these verbal assaults are the visual ones: erotic lap dances, bare breasts and full-frontal female nudity, a bizarre brush with pedophilia, an exaggerated (albeit clothed) male erection, and dildos literally falling from the sky. The objective in all cases? Non-stop gross-out humor.

  • Families can talk about the movie's over-the-top style of humor. How far will filmmakers go to elicit laughter? Did any scenes make you uncomfortable?
  • The movie is full of jokes about race, weight, religion, sexuality, etc. Is that a form of stereotyping? Is it OK to play up stereotypes in the name of humor?
  • It's usually important for a movie to have a character the audience canroot for. How do the filmmakers make the main characters likeable inspite of their outrageous, ridiculous behavior?
  • How does the movie depict "families"? How isDon's gang of salespeople like a family? Are there things to admireabout their relationship? How does that family compare with the actualSelleck family?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Material success at any cost is the desired goal. The characters are immoral, unethical, hedonistic, and immature -- and suffer no consequences for their behavior. Racialinsensitivity and exaggerated gay advances are presented as laughable,as are religion, smoking, drug use, and sexuality. By the film's end, minor lessons are learned and values are explored, but not convincingly. Only one positive message is delivered: Teamwork is a key to achievement.

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: Most characters are driven by selfishness, vanity, and unchecked carnal desires; several also exhibit racism and/or other prejudices. No strongly positive female characters to speak of.

What to watch for
  • violence false2

Violence: All of the action sequences are meant to be funny: A mini-riot erupts at a used car sale, children in a plastic jumping ring are flung against the mesh walls, several salesmen attack a small Asian man during a moment of racial animosity.

  • sex false4

Sex: Countless sexual references throughout, all played for humor. Women are bare-breasted in several scenes and engage in pole dancing, as well as erotic lap dance routines. There's also full-frontal female nudity. In one sequence, the camera cuts between two lovemaking scenes, but neither reveals any substantial nudity or sexual activity. A woman tries to seduce a young boy (in the body of a mature man); a man tries to seduce one of his male staff members. Shots of sexual paraphernalia; many references to and one image of male erection (albeit clothed). In more than one instance, stories are recalled that vividly describe past sexual encounters.

  • language false5

Language: Incessant strong, sexual, and crude language. Multiple uses and forms of "f--k" and "s--t," as well as "ass," "hell," "damn," "oh my God," and more. Frequent references to various bodily functions, body parts ("c--k," "boner," "p---y," etc.), and sexual activity. There are also fat jokes, sexual slurs, and racial slurs, including the "N" word, "queer," and "Jap."

  • consumerism false0

Consumerism: Parodies of Men's Wearhouse and Head and Shoulders commercials.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false3

Drinking, drugs and smoking: A main character passionately advocates smoking in a lengthy scene on an airplane. Some social drinking. A man is seen snorting cocaine in the background of one shot. Occasional references to marijuana and drug use.

Five Word Review by redyeah
Piven great, movie just okay

I Move Cars MFer by steener16
I you like Talladega Nights and that type of humor, you will enjoy The Goods. A ton of crude humor, which I enjoy, and Piven is awesome. The cameo's by Farrell are perfect. They could have added a few more cities to the experience, however the movie was entertaining. I will buy it on DVD. Have fun, wear the appropriate undies, lighten up, and enjoy the show.

Love the cast, high hopes, but just missed by Pos7al
I am a huge fan of Jeremy Piven, though he couldn't help this movie from seeming like it was trying too hard. I'd say pass on seeing it until it is released on DVD, though it could be worth an evening of low expectations and hopes of short-dosed humor. Did it have laughs, yup. It had quite a few, though they seemed to be drowned out by the laughs that didn't make it. A 'Save the hometown dealer' story that really needs no further description. If you want to see a good cast and have low expectations for greatness in humor, (I think we were all spoiled by The Hangover) then I'd say to stop by and give this film a shot. If you want to be laughing every moment you aren't breathing, you are going to be disappointed. See it if: You enjoy the cast and don't expect the movie to match Anchorman, Hangover or Old School Don't see it if: You want a movie where you will recite lines for the next 2 weeks.

They left the "funny" in the trailers! by buckeyeclark
I didn't want to believe the reviews after seeing so many trailers for this movie. I thought, "These people must be missing the jokes." No... the movie was missing the jokes it seemed. It was like taking a 10 minute skit and trying to stretch it into a 2-hour movie. I was anticipating this was going to be a laugh-out riot like "The Hangover." Not even close! The energy and zaniness I felt in the trailers just evaporated in the movie. Yes, there were some funny parts, but no... audience laughter was hard to find also. I'm really disappointed. I was expecting so much more than I got. Skip the theater. If you really want to see this one, rent it for the DVD player on a stay-home evening. No... I don't think think Blu-Ray will make it funnier. LOL

Not bad by filmfreak880
I heard a lot of buzz about this movie. But I thought it was pretty funny. It had a very quick ending but all together it was quite funny. Jeremy Piven did a great job and Kathryn Hahn made the movie for me. Its definitely worth checking out

So-So by Hustleje
The movie was I expected... SO-SO.. I didnt even think the movie looked great before I saw it, but seeing advertisements everywhere I went to see it. Movie wasnt that funny.. it was not even silly..Just stupid. Piven is not funny. Ving Rhames and David Koechner were the two funniest, which isnt saying much. I think Craig Robinson is hilarious, but he was not good in this film at all. I wouldn't waste your money on this

Not funny at all by babypluto07
I went to this movie on opening night thinking it would be hilarious like "the hangover" but it was anything but that. Within 20 minutes, I knew this was going to be a horrible movie and had to keep myself from walking out. The fact that I spent $22.50 on tickets I think is what kept me sitting in my seat. The jokes were just so far and few throughout the movie. Alot of the jokes were just plain stupid. I love movies like "the 40 year old virgin," "talledegha nights," but this was not even in that league. Will Ferrell's cameo wasn't even funny. It was hard to watch. Save your money and rent this one. I was greatly disappointed by the hype of this movie only to have it be such a horrible piece of work!

The Bads. by ijennifer
While watching this movie I was torn. I couldn't decide if I should leave because it was horrible or just sit there because I paid $9.50... The movie made no sense what so ever. I might have half laughed about twice. Save your money.

LOVED IT!!! by vanobert
I loved this movie. I laughed all the way through, and didnt think there was one not funny thing about it. I 'm really sad it's out of the theaters already because, I would love to go see it again with my husband. I hughly recommend it to anyone who loved Anchorman, or pretty much any other Will Ferrell movie!
