As the beginning of Part II echoes the opening of "The Godfather," so too does the end. Because of the manner in which circumstances are handled and considering the people involved, the impact here is more forceful. The tragic flaw has accomplished its poisonous, inevitable designs. Coppola punctuates both movies with a gut-twisting exclamation point.

The New York Times Vincent Canby

The only remarkable thing about Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part II is the insistent manner in which it recalls how much better his original film was...Even if Part II were a lot more cohesive, revealing, and exciting than it is, it probably would have run the risk of appearing to be the self-parody it now seems.

Coppola is unable to draw all this together and make it work on the level of simple, absorbing narrative. The stunning text of "The Godfather" is replaced in Part II with prologues, epilogues, footnotes, and good intentions.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 15+

Brilliant mob movie with graphic violence.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that while this is a cinematic masterpiece, the themes and events of this film is not suitable for young teens. Graphic violence in this film is interspersed with long discussions about mafia strategy and the organization of the family. In the opening scene, a mother begs the local don to spare her only son's life at her husband's funeral. The son is shot soon after.

  • Families can talk about the kinds of decisions Michael Corlenone could have made to avoid becoming involved in the Mafia. Does the film provide an accurate portrayal of Italians in America? How might an Italian American view the film? Does it promote cultural stereotypes?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: While the importance of family is a central theme, this is a story about the mafia family, people who seem to be above the law and justice. The only justice in this film is mob justice which means they lie, cheat and kill on their quest to amass their fortunes and build their empires.

Epic classic - beautiful music by chaptertrey
I loved this movie even more than the first Godfather. I took my 24 year old daughter and she loved it too. I feel so fortunate that we got to see this epic movie in the theater. Of course there's violence and this movie is only for adults but it's so well done; everything about the movie is a masterpiece. The music is beautiful too!

Impressive, intense saga by sfmayotx11
I love the first of the Godfather trilogy, but this one was completely engaging for me as a first-time viewer - what took me so long to see this?! I like the flashbacks worked into the flow and it's fun to see so many familiar faces on the big screen. Can't wait to rent the trilogy and see it all together.
