It's hard to believe, but Hal Holbrook, one of the stage and screen's enduring talents, has never had the solo lead in a feature film. That has been duly rectified with the actor's achingly memorable star performance in the superb That Evening Sun.

Hal Holbrook strips the stereotype of the grumpy old man of sentimental shtick and cutesy old-codger mannerisms.

More than once, the director inserts a gooey flashback to a tender moment between the farmer and his late wife (Dixie Carter) that not only extends an already overlong movie, but also fatally undercuts the artful rigor of its leading man.

Holbrook makes Abner a shining-eyed, noble crank.

A moving if too-leisurely paced effort that benefits immeasurably from the superb performance by its 84-year-old star.

Hal Holbrook ~ Are You Kidding Me? Watch Him Work by Koali
Rate 4 stars Rate 3 stars Rate 2 stars Rate 1 star Do not worry that it is moving to slow. Hal, the scenery and locations are not letting on to where this will go. I prejudged early it would be a Hallmark card style lesson in something. WRONG. Very Americana, very universal. That's all I am going to say. Especially should be seen by anyone who acts or has respect for the highest kind of acting. Special features has an interview with Hal Holbrook worth every second. Dixie Carter is also interviewed beautiful as usual - enlightening. I really realized how much I miss them. Ray McKinnon also interviewed show us his intellectual approach to his Choate character and to acting period. Each cast member was well placed. Highly recommend this for all adults or late teens - not really what kids will sit through, a bit heavy topic. Excellent.
