As one might expect from stuntman-turned-director Nash Edgerton, the action is well staged.

A tasty neo-noir from the James M. Cain school of lust-driven dirty dealings, The Square reps a promising debut by Aussie stuntman-turned-helmer Nash Edgerton.

It lovingly, almost sadistically, lays out the situation and deliberately demonstrates all the things that can go wrong. And I mean all the things.

By the time the final measure of rough cosmic justice is meted out, The Square has completed a tour of moral squalor that is suspenseful, invigorating and sometimes harshly funny.

A Square Deal by everyweek60706
There is something about crime dramas set in places where they 'post' letters and drive on the wrong side of the road in unidentifiable cars (it's a what kind of truck?). You know you're not in Kansas, but you can understand most of what is said. You watch at a comfortable distance, but you can relate and it's relevant. I'm not sure I recognize any of these actors either, but the Christmas in the park with Santa arriving on a boat is a believable warm-climate tradition. The movie opens with a quote attributed to "Mum," "It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye." The violence isn't graphic or gratuitous - it hits you in the gut. There is no nudity and little sex, but this is a man's love story.

Worst movie I've seen in some time. Everything goes wrong for the characters and I didn't care. Seemed like the 3 Stooges would be coming out at any moment to smack someone in the face or hit them in the head and finish with a "nyak, nyak, nyak" or a "look what you've done now, you skillet head". Watch the 2 minute "short" in the beginning and you'll get the picture. Better yet, stay home or go see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
