Like the filmmaking itself, the violence has no passion, no oomph, no sense of real or even feigned purpose.

A well-acted and attitudinal action movie, a return to Ritchie's trademark "Mockney" style, which takes amusing and twisted turns.

The bottom line is, all these people chase the same money around with the success of doggie tail-biting, and it's a lot of fun, and it's not often in these con films that everybody is conning everybody, and they're all scared to death, and nobody knows which cup the pea is under.

It's all here: the ingenious, obscenity-laced language, the double crosses that turn into triple crosses, the swaggering characters so in love with themselves. GottaLove RocknRolla!

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

not for kids

Stylish, edgy British crime caper for grown-ups.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this fast-paced crime film depicts a constant stream of convivial criminality and bad behavior, including stealing, shooting, extortion, bribery, money laundering, gambling, drug and alcohol use, and more. As bloody and painful as some of it gets, director Guy Ritchie and his cast make it all look like great fun, too -- which makes for a great caper film but doesn't exactly convey any lessons above and beyond the code of the streets. Expect non-stop swearing and smoking, as well as frank depictions of drug use, violence, and more.

  • Families can talk about the appeal of crime cinema, particularly stylized crime comedies like this one. Can you successfully mix laughs with a body count? Can a movie with murder in it be taken as lightly as this one would like to be? Families can also discuss the negative consequences of drug addiction, as depicted in this film with startling frankness. How realistic do you think the portrayal is?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Extensive discussion of criminal activities like robbery, extortion, bribery, tax evasion, informing for the police, gambling, and drug use. Characters express some anti-immigrant sentiments. Discussion of the difference between British and European criminals.

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: Beatings, shootings, stabbings, car crashes, drowning, and threats of torture. Golf clubs, baseball bats, baseballs, pencils, and more are used as weapons, with visible blood and gore. Also fistfights, scuffling, torture, pepper spray used as a weapon, and the threat of being devoured by crayfish.

  • sex false3

Sex: Some male nudity (buttocks). Quick-cut sex scenes. Women appear clad in underwear. Discussions of homosexuality; references to masturbation, oral sex, and hiring "escorts" sexual gestures.

  • language false5

Language: Pervasive strong English-accented language, including "f--k," "motherf---er," "damn," "s--t," "c--k," "bastard," and "wanker." Also derogatory sexual slang like "fag," "poof," "homo," "fairy," and more.

  • consumerism false3

Consumerism: Some brands visible or discussed, including Range Rover and Johnnie Walker Black Label. Clips from Howards End are seen.

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false5

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Characters drink wine, champagne, beer, and hard liquor; cigars and cigarettes are smoked nearly constantly; extensive discussion and depiction of hard drug use, including crack, cocaine, and more. The dire ramifications and long-term effects of hard drug use are shown, with "junkie" characters living in squalor and enduring seizures and vomiting.

Very very cool flick by tracy21
This was a really well done film, it's Ocean's 11 meets fight club. Guy Ritchie lives up to the hype.

I AM RocknRolla!!! by knoc43
I F-ing loved this movie. Ever since I saw the first preview for it, I have been craving to see it and today i finally did; I am not a Guy Ritchie "fan." From the start RocknRolla keeps you laughing and having a good time and wanting to learn more about the characters. RocknRolla is loaded with great action scenes and some hilarious dark comedy. The story was very well put together. What made the whole movie work the most was how it linked everything together in the end. BEAUTIFUL!!! And RocknRolla-Johnny hilarious crazy character, I loved him. If you live anywhere near L.A. or New York City you must go now. Everybody else im sorry but you must wait. =(

Great Plot and characters by td411741
My buddy and I really enjoyed this movie! We are two guys that like an action movie to have an interesting plot and characters. This movie had both and lots of laughs! It was very entertaining and held my attention with several surprises. Guy Ritchie is back doing what he does best! I am looking forward to the sequel!

Real class with RocknRolla by treyraider
If you liked Snatch this is a must see. It is very similar in it's premise, like most of Ritchie's movies. A couple of guys who are unwittingly over their heads and we have a whole bunch of fun watching them get out of it. Hilarious dialogue spoken with British wit and even better acting. A slew of characters who all are entertaining in their own right, and even when it seems as though it is going off subject it always finds it's way back with a bang. Also remember that in Richie's movies there is always a wild card that seems completely out of left field, but is still entertaining until he ties it in to the story when it matters the most. Also I'm glad to see that they guaranteed there will be a sequel with the characters returning for another go round. The only thing I didn't like about it was Ludacris. I guess he is the newest addition to the tradition of trying to make rappers actors. He just isn't that good. To sum up, it's fun, it's gritty, and it's well written. A must see

Guy Ritchie rocks my socks!!!!! by stacy718
....as a director. If you like Ritchies other movies (Snatch, Lock Stock etc.) then you'll love RockNRolla. Of course it helps to have my obsession (Gerard Butler) in the starring roll. I say GO!!!!!! If only to see Gerard Butlers bare ass!

I want to be a real RocknRolla by jabarig
Yes the plot is very similar to Richie's previous hits but with enough fun twists that make it worth watching. I highly recommend it! Fun from start to finish. Great characters hilarious dialogue and situations. The performances were impeccable. However, I would avoid watching it with any skeptics. If you're not already a Guy Richie acolyte this probably won't win you over.

RockNRolla by bflofan
What an incredible movie! We laughed, we felt the Wild Bunch's pain and felt quite satisfied by the end of this Guy Ritchie film! The soundtrack was great and Gerard Butler plus the rest of cast were perfectly matched for their roles! Run to see this film!!

A fun time at the movies! by Ormabe
Look, this film will not redefine life as we know it . . . but it is a fun way to spend a couple hours in the theater. My absolutely favorite scene was the dance. LOVED IT. I plan on seeing this again just to see that scene again . . . goofy, sexy, marvelous.

Not suited for the entire family, but quite entertaining. by jacqlyn1964
Excellent source of wonderful English crime, situational humor. The acting is superb and Guy Ritchie did a great job of putting it all together. Since the language is rough, as I expected it would be, and there is some brief nudity and drug use, the movie is not suited for children under sixteen, IMHO.
