Afterlife is slow-moving but relentless, and judging from a post-credits teaser that promises yet another sequel, it has an unquenchable appetite for your brain cells.

This witless installment features the usual ultra-slow-motion mayhem and helpful freeze-frames to allow us to admire the extra dimension. Fans will not be happy, however, to learn that Ms. Jovovich is more decently clothed this time around.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson (who also directed the original) can hardly manage a hint of suspense or excitement. And excitement is exactly what the film ought to have in excess.

If you're interested in this movie, it's because you love either seeing zombies explode (check), the video games (major character included, check) or Jovovich kicking undead butt in every conceivable way (check and mate).

Shot in actual 3D rather than being the latest example of the horrible post-shooting conversion process, "Afterlife" undeniably looks terrific.

For Families provided by Common Sense Media

Iffy for 16+

Fourth film in gory, video game-based series is now in 3-D.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Resident Evil: Afterlife is the fourth film in the sci-fi/horror series based on a video game and the first to be presented in 3-D -- which makes the near-constant fantasy violence (fighting, decaptiations, gross monsters, lots of weapons, zombie attacks) even more intense. The strong female hero, Alice, battles both a horde of the mutant zombie creatures and the evil corporation responsible for the outbreak that caused them. Language is infrequent, but "f--k" is used several times. This series continues to grow in popularity, and it's likely that teens will be champing at the bit to see it.

  • Families can talk about the movie's violence. How did it make you feel? Were you scared? Were you grossed out?
  • Is Alice a strong female role model, or is she a stereotype?
  • How do the Resident Evil movies compare to the video games they're based on? Which is more entertaining -- the interactive zombie-killing experience, or the passive one?

The good stuff
  • message true0

Messages: Most of Alice's concerns in this installment are with being human. She loses her "superpowers" and is grateful for the chance to be normal again. But her humanness means nothing without companionship, so she does anything she can to find more survivors. The humans in this movie try to work together to solve problems, even if some of them aren't trustworthy.

  • rolemodels true0

Role models: Despite her penchant for violence, Alice is a strong female character -- brave, highly trained and skilled. She cares for others and risks her own well being to help others. (Only once does she let a fellow human die on purpose.)

What to watch for
  • violence false4

Violence: Strong fantas/action violence, including lots of guns, blades, throwing stars, slicing and dicing, biting, explosions, and martial arts fighting. Some scary moments as zombies jump out and attack; their faces open up into creepy teeth and tendrils. Characters shoot other characters in the head, and viewers see decapitations. One giant zombie attacks people with a huge homemade hammer/scythe. Alice has a gun that shoots coins and does a lot of damage. Alice is stabbed with a hypodermic needle. In one scene, a plane swoops too low over a field of zombies and leaves a huge red smear.

  • sex false1

Sex: Women wear skimpy and/or tight clothing.

  • language false4

Language: Several uses of "f--k," but language isn't too frequent overall. Other words include "s--t," "hell," "bitch," "goddamn," and "ass."

  • consumerism false0

    Consumerism: Not an issue

  • drugsalcoholtobacco false0

Drinking, drugs and smoking: Not an issue

Resident Evil: Afterlife "ALICE" by Javajive
No doubt about it Ms. Milla Jovovich is amongst my favorite Adventure-Action women. The lovely Actress is phenomanel on screen as well as off-when doing Interviews: MILLA's very"nice & funny" & serious lady. I lov' her Action woman character role of ALICE in the hit franchise RESIDENT EVIL saga's and the newest one RE 4 "Afterlife" is a BLAST as she and her colleagues continue their quest to get to safety away from the killer zombies and to find a core to "heal" human kind. I liked the whole Cast along with ALICE/Millia Jovovich: Claire/Ali Larter (also in Extinction) took some time gettin' used to her 'cause I like Valentine RE 2 "Apocalyspe" more & was happy to see her in "Afterlife" also! RE 2 is by far my most favorite then it's Extinction then this new one "Afterlife" which kicked mega buns!!!!! The 3D effects were crystal-Clear action pack and "all" those ALICE's just blew me away....'that was spectacular & that big monster of a man w/the axe that was sheer horror! Great movie.

It was not all that bad. by Havoc571
The action was great! But for those of you who have played and followed the games and story, it will end up a bit of a disappointment. Characters that were never mentioned in the movies before appear. Yet in the games they were very important. All in all I would say that it is movie worthy and was actually not that bad in 3D.

Could they have made a worse 4th movie in the Resident Evil franchise? by Timbo2274
I have been a Resident Evil Fan since the original came out. To be completely honest I was very disappointed with this newest installment. The 2nd & 3rd movies at least pick up at the ends of the 1st & 2nd movies & follow the underlying plot of the original trilogy. The attempt to do the same with this newest chapter in the saga is completely sub-par, in my opinion. To me the beginning of Afterlife was basically the most action filled & exciting part of the whole damn movie. Granted I didn't see the 3D or iMax version. As for the rest of the movie it was slow paced & even boring at times.

Horrible movie by lehesai
A really horrible movie. Bad acting, no plot, no real ending. Just zombies, guns, men in black and a lot of useless dialogue. Wait for the sequel... It may even be much worse.

Seriously!!! by mtdidus
I love the walking dead on AMC so I thought I may like another zombie type movie, but seriously. There was nothing in this movie even remotely believable. Not a fan.
