Has all the right ingredients: a smart script, a likable hero, a dash of romance, more than a touch of comedy, and a lot of fast-paced action.

    Chicago Tribune Gene Siskel

An adventure film that plays like an old-time 12-part serial that you see all at once, instead of Saturday-to-Saturday. It's a modern "Thief of Baghdad." It's the kind of movie that first got you excited about movies when you were a kid. (Translation for today's children: It's better than anything on TV.) [12 June 1981]

Instant favorite since Sneak Preview by Gratty
I saw Raiders with a buddy at a sneak preview showing, knowing only what we saw in the black & white, text-only ads (remember newspapers?): "From the creators of Jaws and Star Wars come a new action adventure hero," perhaps not quoted exactly, but more than enough to get us in back then. An instant favorite from the first shadowy glimpses of Our Hero till he steps into the light and takes on the Nazis - cooking from one moment to the next, great visual storytelling from Spielberg, excellent characters, humor and action (THE TRUCK CHASE) combine to make perfection. Play the Raiders March in your head, if it isn't already going.
